PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- How about this for perfection by North Texas softball pitcher Hope Trautwein: 21 batters faced, 21 strikeouts.

Trautwein threw the perfect game Sunday, striking out all 21 Arkansas-Pine Bluff batters she faced in a 3-0 victory.

It was the first perfect game in North Texas history and is believed to be the first perfect seven-inning game in NCAA Division I history with every out being a strikeout.

NCAA records list two other pitchers with 21 strikeouts in a seven-inning game, but neither of those was a perfect game. Alabama's Alexis Osorio had a 21-K game against Fordham in 2018, and California's Michele Granger did it against Creighton in 1991.

Trautwein, a senior from Pflugerville, Texas, also had 21 strikeouts in a seven-inning game in her first start this season. But the right-hander also gave up five hits and two runs in a 6-2 win against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 13.

The NCAA single-game record for strikeouts is 28, by Northwestern's Eileen Canney in an 18-inning game against Minnesota in 2006, and Baylor's Cristin Vitek in 16 innings against North Carolina in 2004.

Having played softball in high school I would loved to have seen this.

Thanks, Samantha!! Truly amazing!! Both my daughters played Jr. softball as kids. I played baseball and softball as a kid. We had a league of fast pitch softball in my hometown. Went to a game most nights. The young women who play NCAA softball are incredible and the pitchers are beyond belief.

Thanks for posting,
Mark

Perfect games are rare and to get all batters on strikeouts is even rarer. That is an amazing feat.

A great feat of near impossibility. Sadly, women's sports records are to being overtaken for history by those bigger and stronger and out of reach now by many.

An amazing performance to be sure!! It seems today that serious fast pitch softball has been relegated to women and some of the best games I have seen on TV really showcase the quality they bring to the game. When I was a boy growing up in the Tampa Bay area back in the 40's, 50's and early 60's, we had one of the best softball teams ever to play the game. The Clearwater Bombers won 10 Amateur Softball Association world championships during that period. I used to go to some of their games and watch how professional they seemed. I've lost track of what became of those men's leagues but I haven't seen any indication they still play the game.

Would rather watch a softball game than MLB. The girls just seem more focused.

How many pitches in that game?

From 1968 through 1971 I was involved with a fast pitch team for the Atlantic Submarine Force and it was tough to beat us. We were 3-0 against The King and His Court. Had one pitcher (Vern Sutherland) that had been starting for the team for 21 years. Was nothing for him to throw two no hitters in one day. We played on a great field at Norfolk Naval Station with light, brick walls in the outfield and a brick grandstand. It had been built during WWII for baseball.
Great times playing such teams as The King and Raybestos Cardinals, etc. Our group of sailors did nothing but play softball and lounge around. Had a basketball team that had similar duty. Had one Parade Magazine All American (can't remember his name, Sennett or something like that) on it and another member of the 1968 Olympic team (Mike Barrett). Had our own Greyhound-style bus with Sublant Sea Raiders painted on it. Went from Maine to Key West and from New York to San Diego with those guys. Would have made a great TV series.
Played some good college teams and won our share. Beat a good team at New York Athletic Club. That's how I spent 3 years, 8 months and 6 days during the Viet Nam war. And really got turned on to photography.
