PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- How about this for perfection by North Texas softball pitcher Hope Trautwein: 21 batters faced, 21 strikeouts.

Trautwein threw the perfect game Sunday, striking out all 21 Arkansas-Pine Bluff batters she faced in a 3-0 victory.

It was the first perfect game in North Texas history and is believed to be the first perfect seven-inning game in NCAA Division I history with every out being a strikeout.

NCAA records list two other pitchers with 21 strikeouts in a seven-inning game, but neither of those was a perfect game. Alabama's Alexis Osorio had a 21-K game against Fordham in 2018, and California's Michele Granger did it against Creighton in 1991.

Trautwein, a senior from Pflugerville, Texas, also had 21 strikeouts in a seven-inning game in her first start this season. But the right-hander also gave up five hits and two runs in a 6-2 win against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 13.

The NCAA single-game record for strikeouts is 28, by Northwestern's Eileen Canney in an 18-inning game against Minnesota in 2006, and Baylor's Cristin Vitek in 16 innings against North Carolina in 2004.

Having played softball in high school I would loved to have seen this.

I saw this as a segment on one of the news program. She was impressive to say the least, and her post game interview showed that she is just as impressive off the diamond as she is on. Do you know anymore about her such as what her major is in college?

I figure that a perfect game where every out is a strikeout would be a perfect perfect game.

And a game where every pitch is a strike resulting in a perfect perfect game (and no foul balls with two strikes) would be an immaculate perfect game.

Amazing to even be able to consider possible at any level. Outstanding!!

Great story, thanks for sharing. Back about 25 years ago my niece played softball in SC. She was the best pitcher in the state and while she received numerous scholarship offers, none were from div. 1 schools. She wanted to play in the big leagues so she did a walk-on at South Carolina University (they agreed to pay for her books and fees, but she had to pay for her classes). The only time she saw any action was warming up the batters before a game and occasionally when there was little doubt they would win a game. When she complained about not seeing any real action, she was told the starters (both from CA) had played more games in a year than she most likely had played in her life. The first year on the team they went to the final game of the college world series and was runner up, so she did get an award for that. The second year was a repeat of the same -- bench sitting 95% of the time. After two years, she quit and concentrated on her studies. She graduated from USC but her softball days were done.

I am a fan of women's softball. My daughter was a four year starter in college and was also an assistant coach for several years then head coach for nearly ten years. It seem TV has covered more games this year than in the past. I'm for that.

A sad commentary of athletic politics in action. Surely, she deserved more consideration.
