The entire area is pretty amazing- this was taken after taking off out of Pullman Moscow Regional airport ( KPUW ) I thought the crop beginning to show yellow showed the dune like hills of the area. I think the crop was Rape Seed for making canola oil

Take the back roads, don't be in a hurry. Lots of old deserted buildings and beautiful scenery everywhere. I used to live in St John.

I don't live there but visit frequently. The aforementioned Palouse Falls SP is worth a visit (see image) as is Dry Falls SP, a bit further west. Walla Walla, Washington's unofficial wine capitol, is a much more attractive town than Pulman (home of WSU) or Moscow (home of U. of Id.). Second image is of the Vantage Bridge crossing the Columbia. Depending how far you want to drive, you might want to visit the Grand Coulee Dam, on the western edge of what is considered the Palouse. BTW, it's hot and dry there in the summer. Stay hydrated - and enjoy.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the General Chit-chat section. Anyway, my wife and I will be spending 4 nights this summer in Pullman Washington. Paluse has always been on my bucket list and we aren't getting any younger! Anyway, I would appreciate tips, photo spots, etc. Yeah, I am doing google searches etc, but it's always good to get real world tips from people that's been there, done that, and here's what I discovered, etc.

Anybody live in the Palouse area?

Go to the 500PX website and type in Palouse in the search function. You will see lots of photos of the region, some of which are labeled where they are taken. It will give you a good idea what kind of photos are available and at least approximately where they are.

Another nearby place is Kamiak Butte. Take the highway to Palouse and then turn off to the left just after passing the butte. Hike up to the top and the view back towards Pullman is great. Of course, a walk around the campus of WSU will also provide many great views (and if Ferdinand's is open, the ice cream is fabulous - especially the Huckleberry Ripple!). We love it there, but then, Pullman is home (although we don't live there anymore).

Here's my writeup from 2019 that covers a lot. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/private-message-inbox?pmnum=956135
I particularly recommend buying the maps and printing them and taping them together where they overlap.
The hotel I stayed in is geared up for photographers and will prep breakfast extra early if you ask nicely!

I do recommend poking around through the map provider's website and his shots, etc. Nothing like circling a spot and driving across the map to where you hope there'll be a shot. But don't miss the Butte. It opens around sunrise when the light's really pretty. And bring a 70-200mm in addition to the wider angles.

We only had 24 hours, and honestly my wife bored a bit from my automotive "searches" without assurance there'd be a good shot. In 4 days you can really get around, just know that like always, the best shots are unexpected.

I copied the text from my post. This should do it! And the blogspot below DOES work. Good luck!

Yes! I got a 6-page map with landmarks and dirt roads, from a pro who also gives tours, advice, etc. at
http://palousemap.blogspot.com/. You can print each page separately and decide whether to tape them all together or not. You might - if you have time - use Google Earth to actually try to view some of the sites and decide whether they're worth visiting. That's how I found Franzen Rd, Ickes Rd and Blair Rd where they intersect east of Palouse on map 4 of 6 (the 4th picture in my post). The Grain Mill (B&W) is southwest of Pullman right on 195. Zooming Google Earth out will also show Palouse Falls State Park south of Route 26.

If you can get out for sunrise and sunset, of course you're better off than I was. The State Park and Steptoe Butte open/close at sunset and sunrise. There's a fee at both so check out the state parks website to get your best deal.

I do recommend Best Western Wheatland Inn in Colfax right on 195 that's very clean and thoughtfully accommodated in a way that your wife(?) would appreciate, because mine did. Like a black towel marked "makeup" that won't get ruined if it's used to remove makeup, like a white one would(!). Good breakfast included, with waffles, eggs and other stuff to make a burrito, etc. And they cater to photogs; you can get fed really early if you ask nicely. We paid $111 by booking directly with them by phone.

A side recco would be The Lumberyard, a "food court" like place in Pullman. Very informal large wooden picnic tables inside a former lumber store with original wooden floorboards and various food "stations" around the perimeter, along with a bar as well. All stations are owned by the proprietor; it's just a different way to design the place.

Last thought - IF you're around Rosalia, north of Steptoe, the Red Brick Cafe is folksy and friendly with great breakfasts and a bakery with raspberry pie that's worth taking along for later on! Right across from an OLD Texaco station in that little town.

Have a ball.

Palouse Falls is great if you can get closer to it. And not far away is a columnar basalt 'park' - columns of volcanic heated basalt rising from the depths of the earth, 8 sided, row upon row. Don't know if my late wife was 'allowed' to do it. She brought a large piece back from there for me and got it on the plane to NY. Still have this memento of a visit to her sister/brother-in-law. (BTW - stay alert for snakes!!!)
