On our recent trip to see the grandchildren, we stopped in Washington, DC to see my sister-on-law. While there I planned to go to the Mall and get some sun rise pictures. As with all things in DC, I was disappointed. I awoke to a gray, rainy day.

I went to the Mall and visited, to me, the most personal thing - The Wall. On this spring morning it was deserted. I took some illustrative pictures that I include in this post.

I was sorry not to see more people there, but it was probably a good thing - it really depresses tourists to see an old man cry.

Gray and rainy is appropriate, it helps hide the tears.

Good photos, regardless of the weather you did well. I have seen the wall from a distance, but did not get within reading range. Even though I was out of the army before Vietnam became a US war, there were men I had served with who may have been on the wall and I did not want to see their names.

Also: Please don't refer to things as a "zoo" when situations become crazy. A good zoo is well run with professional staffs and well cared for animals.

I appreciate your visit and comments. Please note that I am sure that Tony's use of "zoo" was in no way intended to be disrespectful of the many tourists who crowd the Mall, just a term to indicate a large number of people.

Calling the thousands of people who visit the Memorial to pay their respects to their friends and kin "a zoo" is highly disrespectful. So, stay away from the zoo on Memorial Day, when the animals will be gathering there to find their loved ones' names.

thanks, great set and as always very emotional, I prefer to visit very early or very late (small or O crowds), some times when you arrive early there are groups washing the Wall and you can help and the water from the hoses hides the tears.

to all who understand - WELCOME HOME

Amen, Tom.

Thank you For your comments. I probably should have directed my "zoo" comments to a different section of UHH. I spent over 30 years working in zoos with some great people and fascinating animals.

I've thought about being a volunteer escort for Honor Flight, but since I don't know when the flights are and volunteers have to pay a few hundred or more to go it's probably not feasible until I retire. I, myself, haven't been to DC in many years.

Love these compositions and especially the subjects.
Always a somber time for me, when remembering our fallen heroes, thanks for sharing these Mike!
