I've used GIMP for years and I like certain features of it a lot. One thing, though...I've found that when I download for any reason after I delete the program (I hav mac) when you do download, there is a leg time...so the program opens but the features just don't work. It's as if the cursor has no effect. It take a while...even up to an hour...before it effectively loads. I have a rather fast computer so it's GIMP that for some reason is responsible for this.

Maybe there is some residual code left after you delete the program? If the user settings are left behind, and there is something that isn't compatible with a new version, that can certainly cause those types of issues. I can't speak for MacOS, but with Linux each successive version of GIMP is getting faster loading.

You may very well be right about "residual" settings being left behind when I delete. But, I have thought that may be the case and I did search the best I could in the library but couldn't find anything. So, now when I do rarely for one reason or another have to reinstall...I wait patiently for it to engage fully rather than get utterly frustrated.

Thanks AviRoad, since my career doesn't evolve around photography and is just a hobby, I'm interested to see how it works. If there are too many flaws, bugs or obstacles creating frustration, the good thing is I can always move on to another program. Guess that's one reason why its free....

Another possibility for MacOS, Windows, and well, my preference Linux is an application called Glimpse.

Glimpse is a fork off of GIMP and was redesigned with a more modern feel and focused on usability. It is still open source and may succomb to some of the same issues. I have not used it yet, but another forum member that I have spoken with uses it exclusively and has nothing but praise.

Photography isn't my forte but I use photo-software a lot. I use it chiefly to create compositions for my artwork. GIMP can do an enormous number of things. Even if you limit yourself to certain uses like I do, you'll find that after you get past the "learning curve" it'll be a program you might even rely a lot on for even casual...maybe even primarily, casual purposes. I have a number of photo-software programs and even still, for certain functions, I do go back to GIMP.

Thank you Avi, hopefully I'll enjoy exploring all its possibilities...

I've noticed there are numerous artistic plugin's for GIMP.

There are, but be careful they are compatible with the version of GIMP you are using. I've downloaded some for a previous version before GIMP completely redesigned how plugins were used, and half of them don't work. To be honest, I'm more experienced in darktable than GIMP, and have many more links for LUT files and stuff like that.

Good to know, I'll research before any action taken...thanks again.

For those with a Mac GIMP lost the developer for the Mac version.

Did he give up over the latest infrastructure changes? Or was this before that announcement?

Welcome to the world of The GIMP. It's a great program with many features. It has taken me awhile to become familiar with them. Patience, trial and error, google searches are the key.

Ping me off line if you'd like to view a beginner's presentation that I put together.

Would you mind sharing some or all of your knowledge in the Post Processing section? There are many of us out there and all help for such a small community here would be very much appreciated. If not, I am interested and would love a PM with that material.

Cheers,
Tony

Hi, Tony.

Will do, if I can find the presentation. Thanks for asking.

I may never get to "drop by." My in-laws are thinking about leaving Loxley to be nearer to relatives in Raleigh.
