we have been there several times...you will really love it. I usually take a D750, 17-35, 24-70 and the 70-200. If you can pack a small unipod or table top tripod they will come in handy for sunset/sunrise shots or late night around the pool.
Extra battery and a charger along with extra cards.
The D800 will do a great job.
Watch out for SALT SPRAY and MOUNTAIN MIST, bring some rags and LENS CLEANER and lens wipes.

The glasses cleaner spray from SUNGLASS HUT removes the salt spray/salt from the optics and the camera body immediately and is the Best cleaner that I've found to do the job for that. Buy two cleaner kits at the airport and it is the best investment you will make.

My wife and i will be going to Hawaii September 2021. We have never been. I own Nikon equipment. Since we are flying ( I don't want to check camera equipment). I will be taking just one camera Nikon D800. If you were going and was limited to one or two lens, what would you take..?

We don't know what lens(s) you have but if you are looking for a lens to cover anything you will encounter...28-300mm.

I looked at Image Resource and it looks like larryepage's suggestion of the Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S may be your best option for a one lens trip. Although the 28-300 offers more range, it is not as sharp for all the aperture/focal lengths combinations. If you want a little extra range, add in a 1.4X teleconverter. Again, renting may be your other best option.

A 20mm prime and the 28-300 is a perfect combination. I have used this for a few trips. I think I also took the 50mm, but ended up not using it.

I did take a 24-120 on two trips. Saved a lot of weight in Not taking the 24-70 and the 70-200. I did miss the 70-200 when shooting surfers, boats and isolating subjects like palm trees and such but not a big deal.

so- 24-120 and a 17-35 would cover you for 'everything'. Not a lot of weight to carry.

It’s amazing.
The OP states he is flying to Hawaii and is going to take one body, his D800, and one, maybe two, lenses and asks what we would take. What kind of responses does he get? 3 lenses, 4 lenses, a back-up body, a tripod, a bridge camera...
I think that some of our UHH members have a reading and comprehension problem.

Just a technical point - I don’t believe the Nikon 1.4X teleconverter is compatible with the 24-120mm lens.

Sharing information regarding equipment others have taken to Hawaii, no matter what the original post said, offers a spectrum of experience and what works/doesn't work which could impact and influence the original poster to change their plan(s).

The more first hand information the better, no matter if what is suggested follows the exact question guideline or not.

He has never been to Hawaii, and the question actually 'speculates' on his plan to take the equipment he listed. He could be wrong....or misdirected as to what might be needed or be the most practical on the trip.

Good points - I saw the comment someone made about not sticking to the exact wording of the question. Mentioned in that regard was pieces of gear like a backup camera body, one of the items I suggested. My point in that regard was that someone going on a significant, and perhaps once in a lifetime trip, should not proceed on the assumption that their main camera will not fail them.

I go often (pre-pandemic) and I take my 16-15 F4 and my 28-300 with my D610. I have a back pack that handles my computer the gear, polarizer, and accessories plus my headphones.

Entirely possible. I do not own Nikon. But I was able to examine the 24-120 and compare it to what was indicated for the 28-300 on Image Resource.

But if I did own Nikon, I would be inclined to go with the 24-120 especially on the recommendation of larryepage and lensmaster. Again, the OP needs to see about renting the lens if they don't have access to one. I rented a lens for my 4/3rds camera for my first and possible only trip to Germany and it was the smartest move that I could have made. It was similar to the 24-120 in range and I only switch out the lens for a total of 3 shots of a door that the wide angle end of the zoom could not cover. That was a time period of nearly two weeks with one lens on the camera.

larryepage is correct that the lens will be a little short on the long end of the range. But my wife and I have been to Hawaii 5 or 6 times on three of the islands. From what I know, if I owned a Nikon D800 and could only take one lens, I would take the 24-120. I believe larryepage's and lensmaster's information is the best for a single body and single lens combination.

When I went to Hawaii I took an Olympus SP350 and a Ricoh WG-4. The SP350 because it runs on 2 AA batteries which you can purchase anywhere, has a hot shoe for an auxiliary flash, and shoots RAW. The WG-4 because it's convenient and my spare. As a last resort your smartphone has an excellent camera as part of it. unless you have time to spare and are going for a month or more, use your time time to see sights and record the memories in your brain. My camera bag for traveling has those two cameras, an Olympus compatible flash, and several small camera stabilizing devises - C-Clamps with a bullhead small tripod with long Velcro strap, and several batteries for the WG-4

Exactly, what would we do within his travel parameters. How does anything else help him?
