I mention as this USB tool lets you extract the EXIF data from these two Nikon models to a database of their software on your computer. When you get the film scanned to JPEG, you can then apply that EXIF into the JPEGs as if the files had been created by the digital camera. I use another software to set the dates as my EOS 1v doesn't properly maintain an internal clock. With still another tool, and an accurate memory / notes, I can apply lens data to the JPEGs to complete the EXIF..

I also use the meta35 to get the EXIF data, which is needed most of the time.

I use a low-fee software EXIF Date Changer Pro for a GUI interface to EXIFTOOL to batch update the JPEGs to the shooting date / time (approx) of the original film dates.

I use EXIFTOOL directly in a command window to apply camera and lens tags to the JPEGs to mimic the same values from a digital camera. I've learned to shoot a roll with just one lens or some obvious focal length difference to get the lenses right from just the focal length. I used to use 'memory', but now I add a calendar note when I finish shooting as it can be 3+ months later get my film developed and scanned and begin the EXIF updates.

I still have my F100 as well as the F5 with motor drive. Neither has been used in a couple of decades, and both are still in excellent condition, at least visually. The only film cameras I still use these days are medium format, and even those only infrequently. My darkroom equipment - Durst enlargers, drums, Nikon lenses, etc are covered deeply in dust. It will be up to my heirs to figure out what to do with them.

I have a F100 in mint condition, a 50mm 1.4 and a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f.2.8 and 15 36 exposure rolls of Provia 64 along with Paid Processing mailers.

I just offered them to B&H, Adorama and KEH as trade in on a Nikon D500, but have not heard. If you are interested possibly we could make a deal. Presently, I do not know their $$$ worth.

I have the F100 with battery grip, amongst a score of other film and digital cameras and many more lenses. I still don't like the plastic film cassette holder inside and wonder if I can have it changed to a decent metal one?

I used an F5 backed up by an F100 for all of my 35 mm work. Both great cameras, I would highly recommend them both. Recently sold them to KEH camera.

Thinking about getting a used Nikon F5 or maybe an F100 for my older Nikon lenses. Any advice? Thanks

People asked this question and argued over it even back in the day, F5 or F100. Personally I'd go F5.

Regarding the F5 software, I have Photo Secretary and it appears it will even work under Win 10. Access to camera data is common in 2021 but it wasn't common in a film camera. The MF-28 back for the F5 also allowed you to imprint aperture/shutter info on the negs between frames.

The Photo Secretary software works under Win 10 but you can't install it. You have to simply copy the installed folder from an old computer onto a Win 10 computer.

Yes, that's true. I have done exactly that. The original installer came on floppies and it would also be a 16bit installer which means it wouldn't work on any 64bit operating system.

Cheep batteries and expensive FM3a which is significantly more expensive than the F5 now.

I have an F5 bought new and, if it is anywhere near as durable as my two F4s, I don’t think you can go wrong with an F5. My F4s had been used for about 15 years by a photojournalist friend, mostly in Africa and the Middle East. They have been my most used 35mm cameras for the last 20 years and still function flawlessly. I bought the F5 for when the F4s died, but I may go first. I’ve only run five films through the F5.
