Thinking about getting a used Nikon F5 or maybe an F100 for my older Nikon lenses. Any advice? Thanks

I have an F5 and do enjoy the camera. You won't go wrong. Though, I tend to gravitate towards my F a bit more.

The thing I did do after getting the F5 was to purchase a couple of extra battery holders. Having a spare, fully loaded, battery holder beats trying to change out batteries while "on the road".

If you go with either the F5 or F100, consider a 3rd party product Meta35 - http://www.meta35.com/shop/m35-n-1

Their website is sleek and modern, but not very helpful for information. If you're a MAC user, note their lack of update plans for new OS.

I mention as this USB tool lets you extract the EXIF data from these two Nikon models to a database of their software on your computer. When you get the film scanned to JPEG, you can then apply that EXIF into the JPEGs as if the files had been created by the digital camera. I use another software to set the dates as my EOS 1v doesn't properly maintain an internal clock. With still another tool, and an accurate memory / notes, I can apply lens data to the JPEGs to complete the EXIF.

I use this EXIF data to understand what I did for each image, both the successes and failures.

I absolutely love my F100.

When the F5 was Nikon's current pro camera Ken Rockwell called the F100 the best film camera ever, regardless of price. Then the F6 came out and he gave it that title, but still calls the F100 the second best.

He does not care for the F5...says it is way too bulky, but loves the F6.

From the lead-in to his F100 review:

"As of 2007, I got a Nikon F6 which is a somewhat better camera, but way more expensive. If money matters, get a used F100 for a few hundred dollars and you'll have gotten the deal of the century. If you don't mind the expense, get an F6, which is more refined from the F100 and offers full matrix metering with old manual focus lenses, as well as full EXIF data logging on its LCD. (see my F6 review.)

Read my minor comments below if you want, but don't ever forget that there is no other 35mm camera on Earth offering a better combination of practical features and performance (for me anyway) to get you the images you demand."

Originally, for the F5 and F6, it was the MV-1. They are out there as well, but pricey. Never used one, but film being what it was and is, I wonder how much value the EXIF data would have.

Hi Frank:
I have a F4 and a F5. The F4 is a beautiful camera but the F5 is more versatile for someone who shoots digital and film. I can use all my AFS G lenses on the F5. After I purchased the F4, I bought several "D" lenses because they had the required screw drive AF. I can use those on the F5 and my digital D800/D850. In my mind, the F5 is a reasonably priced transistion camera, the best of all worlds. By the way, the Nikon "E" lenses will only work wide opens.

Used the F5 in my wedding photography business for years. It was a monster, you could use it to hammer nails and it will still keep ticking.

I have the Nikon Photo Secretary software and the MC-33 cable. I used it just to delete the EXIF data and do custom setup that is not possible without it like disable S and P mode altogether. That way the camera only have A and M mode and I don't have to remember which way to turn the dial to switch.

When I shot weddings I used f5's. When I bough my first digital, it was a Fuji so I could use all my Nikkor lens. I still use some of those lenses on my D810. Old lenses work fine on DSLR's. Unfortunately if you use the Z system that is not the case. The reason to buy a F5 or F100 would be to shoot film instead of digital. Otherwise a body with a built in motor will use your older lens to good advantage.
I know many hogs enjoy shooting film but I'll never go back. Digital offers too many advantages and in today's world you end up scanning your negatives anyway. Why add a step?

Jump on line some on both major selling sites - pricey.

I made a lot of money with my three F5 bodies and I personally believe they were the best film camera made for pro shooters. Still have two in storage. I went digital before the F6 and was never interested. Best of luck.

For the fun of it check out Matt Osborne's You Tube Channel. He is a Brit. He is a bit "nerdy" looking
but looks can be deceiving. He is a very good professional glamour and fashion photographer. He uses film for a lot of his work, also digital cameras. He has a lot of posts showing the many vintage Leica cameras from screw mount
which he refers to as Barnack cameras to M series. He uses Nikon F series for his film SLRs. He has one praising the F5 ans I think maybe the F100. There are also other You Tube channels about those cameras. A slight caveat
about the F100's. For some reason the body covering would in time get sticky though not all have had that issue.
Have fun.
