Primarily my camera is used for still photography, however there have been a few occasions where I have used it’s video capabilities to film my wife’s chorus’s performances for them to be posted on YouTube. I used a Canon 5D Mk ll with an external microphone, and I must say I was impressed with the resulting quality.

My twins and I made a 7-minute 48-hour film project submission in 2019 (One of four such that we have done). That's a competition where you are given a character, a prop, a line of dialog, and a genre to work within, and then have 48 hours to make a 100% original film from SCRATCH. It's a sleepless weekend, an insane amount of fun, and a good challenge to your wits and creative instincts. So plot, script, storyboard, assign roles, practice, film, record sound effects, write original music, edit, and submit... Then crash and SLEEP.

If you need an excuse to make a video, check this out: https://www.48hourfilm.com/en/about Then follow the links to your city site or watch some winning films. (We didn't win that year. But we did finish on time!)

We captured over 80GB of 4K data on two cameras over about a 30 hour period. It edited down to < 1 GB 1080P file. So yes, video does eat storage space. We always edit on SSD, and store on slow hard drives.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I would have to learn how to edit on iMovie, but it is well within my motivational learning curve.

I think the OP's question can be stated a different way: How much storage space do you have for still vs. video? Some of my videos were taking up 1GB of storage space. I had to go back and delete some to keep open space for new photos!

Yes it can be stated a different way, for a TOTALLY DIFFERENT ANALYSIS of how much storage is used for whatever you take.
That would be different than what percentage of one's shooting is still and video.
But rephrasing it like that would result in no usable information for the original question.
What percentage of shooting preference has nothing to do with how much storage is used.
Apples and string beans.

Just intrigued to find out what we do use our DSLR/MILC cameras for? (don't count the "I wonder what this button does?" occasions when you accidentally find yourself with a video file)

I'll begin the survey with my "stats" - here they are:

Photography 100% Videography 0%

Hi, two summers; my stats are close to yours. I shoot single images with the rare exception of use of burst mode when continuous action is involved. So make my stats 99.9%single photos: 0.1% bursts.

Re storage space
Easy answer : always more
Here is my tally
1948 2 shoeboxes negatives 2 photo albums
1960 2 slide boxes 3 400’ 8 mm reels
1972 4 slide boxes 10 400’ reels
1999 25 slide boxes 20 400’ reels too many to count Beta VHS-C super 8 videos
2010 all above around 1Tb stills
2021 all analog digitized plus stills video 7 Tb
Yes keep buying larger and larger external drives for about same price that capacity increases price total about the same
Have asked son in law to take over this collection after I am gone it will be quite large by today’s standards, hopefully

No it wouldn’t. He only said what he used each camera for, not how much he used each camera.

I am about to use my camera on a major documentary in the Arctic, which will make it around 50/50

Nearly all stills, however I have produced high end video with my D850 as well as good quality video products with my D500.

I did both film and video production work for over 20 years and still on occasion produce a video piece for former clients.

This being the case I have only produced two short personal videos with these cameras.

Just as good photography is a skill so is good video production.

Those of you who own the Adobe suit might want to challenge yourselves by shooting and post producing a short video, maybe of a group photo shoot. 😳

I currently have a Nikon D850 and previously had a D800 and D300 (plus many others over 60 years) and have never taken video. Once had a video camera to take our son playing soccer. Too hard to watch and too hard to find just the time period I wanted. I know with digital it is probably easier but I have no need for video that I know of. My kids and grandkids, on the other hand, use a lot of video.

After 50 years of still photos plus 8 and 16mm films I have gotten into shooting videos with my Canon SX20 and love the results. Some of my videos have been shown on our local T V station and the image quality looks fairly good. That SX 20 has been around for a long time as I'm sure many of you know but it still works good.
I am well into the 90's so I have started to slow down a little bit but still have a couple more videos in the works.
I have produced a number of videos on interviews with war veterans but those were taken under studio conditions with studio equipment. Editing videos can be very challenging at times but I enjoy it.

50/50 for me. That is why I use Lumix GH series cameras. Their AUDIO is usable, the video is excellent, and the stills are great for 98% of my work. If I need to photograph action or wildlife, I’ll rent, but otherwise, my GH4 is great.

You’re the only one making suppositions here and they’re not very good suppositions.

I suppose you finally made a good supposition but then followed it with a bad one.
