As most relatively serious amateurs, I get a few over time.
My best ones are from a trip to East Africa in early '72; one of a Crested Crane who posed for me outside the lodge near Mt. Kenya. The second was a shot of migrating wildbeest on the Serengeti. I had the slides converted to prints, gave the crane to my parents (who had taken us) and kept the wildebeest one.

If they don't "stand out," I delete them. : )

I have taken more than 300,000 photos of birds in my time (now 62), and I have a huge number of keepers, but this is my favorite. My wife Janet with new friends at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Not staged, and she didn't even know that I had my camera out at the time

I agree. My motto is now "to keep an image, determine if it can be sold commercially, or is it compelling (tells a story).

Of course, there's more than one reason for classing an image as outstanding. For me, technical excellence is not one of them

Totally agree. The image only has to be outstanding to the one who took it. My image for example visually is not my biggest wow image but it’s not the wow that makes the image special.

I'm parafrazeing but I think Ansel Adams said: "taking one or two fine images a year is doing very good"

I've been using a camera since about 1951.
I'm WAY behind on the fine image thing.

Maybe it's the giants standing on my shoulders.

Yes, absolutely.

I researched where Ansel Adams took his iconic Mt Williamson Clearing Storm image outside of the Manzinar Relocation Camp in 1944. On a geolocation site, I found the GPS coordinates of the location. At the Manzinar National Monument, I had a long conversation with the senior Ranger who fine-tuned the last two digits of the coordinates and programmed them into my handheld GPS.

Driving off into the sage, about a ½ mile beyond the Manzinar reservoir, the GPS tracking indicator rotated to the right. I pulled over, packed up the camera and tripod, and walked north, until the GPS beeped. I was within 6' of where Adams set up and did his exposure.

It was cold, and there was a storm moving in across the Sierras. I set up the tripod and took the shot, which I call Mt Williamson Building Storm. Ansel Adams' view was centered on the large rock just off the frame to the left.

Two years later I stopped at the Manzinar Visitors Center with a 13x19 print to give to the Ranger, who I discovered had retired. I left the print at the desk and went on. I got a letter a few months later from the National Monument, stating that my image has been made part of the permanent contemporary art collection for the gallery.

In 2019, I was in Yosemite National Park for a workshop. One of the stops was the Ansel Adams Gallery which had an original print of Mt Williamson for sale. I pulled up my image on my iPhone and leaned it next to the print and grabbed a quick snapshot. One of the gallery employees approached, looked at my image, and told me I had nailed the location and the exposure. I later found out he was Adams' grandson.

On the shoulders of giants.

I'm not in to B/W or AA - but I think your attached pic is superb.

Perhaps 'paraphrasing' ... some of Ansel Adam's cameras required 8"x10" negative stock; I can see why just two images a year!

I always thought being an artist help a lot in composition thus a better photo.
I'm pretty handy with paint & brush and it helps a lot to frame & even to predict a scene.

Like these photos. For the bird, I have the idea already in my mind, so i just kept going back to this spot until a bird flew where i wanted and took the photo.
It took me a total of about 3 hours worth of waiting spread over 5 days.

The same was true for the fireworks. I could hear it and have a good idea of the location. It was happening for a week but prior to taking the photo, I never went beforehand. I only planned in my head where i would get a good composition. I went and took the photo on the last day.

As for the cup, it was a forgotten corner of a store. Only my artist eye saw the potential.

Very nice images. I prefer the B&W version of Hope vs the colour one on the link.
Your many fireworks images at the link are fabulous.
The cup has been processed to be a wonderful pic.
Thanks for posting these.

Yes, I just wish I knew which one it was.
And whose eyes & mind I'm supposed to be using to determine which one.

Been looking through some of my images. I have one image that I consider an absolute standout from anything I have ever taken or likely ever will.

I have only taken 2 images in my life that I specifically intended as modern art. The image I consider a standout is one of the 2 modern art images. It's also the image I put the most thought into prior to shooting it.

I have never displayed this image and likely never will.

Is there one solitary image you have taken that for whatever reason, you consider your standout? Can you pin it to one?

A standout image doesn't necessarily have to be the best image. The reasons we treasure some over others are personal and usually have more to do with the feeling you get from them rather than any perfection perceived by others. My question for you is, why will you likely never displayed your favourite images?

Scroll up and you will see my last comment regarding the need for the image to be the best. It doesn’t need to be the best of anything. It only needs to be outstanding to the one who took it.

I will never display it as I just don’t feel there is a need for others to see it.

Yes, I have some truly awful, like "what was I thinking" kind of images that stand out that I would not likely want to repeat . . .
