Do you have one image that stands out above all others?

Been looking through some of my images. I have one image that I consider an absolute standout from anything I have ever taken or likely ever will.

I have only taken 2 images in my life that I specifically intended as modern art. The image I consider a standout is one of the 2 modern art images. It's also the image I put the most thought into prior to shooting it.

I have never displayed this image and likely never will.

Is there one solitary image you have taken that for whatever reason, you consider your standout? Can you pin it to one?

Which of my photographs is my favorite? The couple I'll keep from the thousand I'll shoot on my digital tomorrow.

Yes (Mabey more like many less than a thousand?) 🤔

A thousand...leaves me at a loss. In a week long photo vacation I've rarely come close. Must be an eye / finger thing, or lack of a mirror to view yourself.

I have three types of images:

A very small number that are important to me and that I would never allow anyone else to see.

A much larger numbers that could be called 'snap shots'. They are the ones, that when I am slightly drunk and missing the good times, I cycle through and sometimes cry a little.

Then there the ones I take/make with the intention of impressing other people, or to express my moods, or just because I wanted to.

I'm parafrazeing but I think Ansel Adams said: "taking one or two fine images a year is doing very good"

"Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like."...David Alan Harvey

I wonder how many photos Ansel Adams took for each one he published?

If I get one or two wall hanger keepers per Nikon holiday, I am happy.

Wildlife photographer David Yarrow mentioned in one video that he might get four to six keepers a year.

I wouldn't dare try to pick just one because I am more of an artist (of the paint and brush kind) than a photographer, so my very best photo would be sad to most people's eyes.

Yes, absolutely.

I researched where Ansel Adams took his iconic Mt Williamson Clearing Storm image outside of the Manzinar Relocation Camp in 1944. On a geolocation site, I found the GPS coordinates of the location. At the Manzinar National Monument, I had a long conversation with the senior Ranger who fine-tuned the last two digits of the coordinates and programmed them into my handheld GPS.

Driving off into the sage, about a ½ mile beyond the Manzinar reservoir, the GPS tracking indicator rotated to the right. I pulled over, packed up the camera and tripod, and walked north, until the GPS beeped. I was within 6' of where Adams set up and did his exposure.

It was cold, and there was a storm moving in across the Sierras. I set up the tripod and took the shot, which I call Mt Williamson Building Storm. Ansel Adams' view was centered on the large rock just off the frame to the left.

Two years later I stopped at the Manzinar Visitors Center with a 13x19 print to give to the Ranger, who I discovered had retired. I left the print at the desk and went on. I got a letter a few months later from the National Monument, stating that my image has been made part of the permanent contemporary art collection for the gallery.

In 2019, I was in Yosemite National Park for a workshop. One of the stops was the Ansel Adams Gallery which had an original print of Mt Williamson for sale. I pulled up my image on my iPhone and leaned it next to the print and grabbed a quick snapshot. One of the gallery employees approached, looked at my image, and told me I had nailed the location and the exposure. I later found out he was Adams' grandson.

On the shoulders of giants.

I always thought being an artist help a lot in composition thus a better photo.
I'm pretty handy with paint & brush and it helps a lot to frame & even to predict a scene.

Like these photos. For the bird, I have the idea already in my mind, so i just kept going back to this spot until a bird flew where i wanted and took the photo.
It took me a total of about 3 hours worth of waiting spread over 5 days.

The same was true for the fireworks. I could hear it and have a good idea of the location. It was happening for a week but prior to taking the photo, I never went beforehand. I only planned in my head where i would get a good composition. I went and took the photo on the last day.

As for the cup, it was a forgotten corner of a store. Only my artist eye saw the potential.

True. As an artist, I often see things to photograph that many other people might not think would even start to make a good photo, but being an artist, I paint things I think my customers want to hang on their walls so I love photos that are wall hangers too, not just snapshots. Still I sell far more of my art prints than I do of my photo prints.

"Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop." Don't make it harder than it has to be . . .

Too many to mention. I do wildlife photography, take about a 1000 images a day. About once a month I get a stand out. So, I would say about 12 to 15 a year.

Of course, there's more than one reason for classing an image as outstanding. For me, technical excellence is not one of them - nice to see but low on the list. Sometimes the inclusion of a title is sufficiently thought provoking to make the difference. Attached is one of mine. I believe a title can make a big difference. It was shot while my dog was tugging at me to move on, but with thought nevertheless. It hangs in more than one house.
