Memory cards - How to label?

I would like advice about putting permanent labels on SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC memory cards.

1) What ink/pen should I use? Is a Sharpie Permanent Marker with an ultra fine point the best? I am concerned about the writing rubbing or washing off. I assume that there are no "safe" stick-on labels.

2) What naming scheme do you suggest? I need to handle a two week safari (non-photographic). Each image will occupy about 25MB. I expect a lot of images, but do not have a good handle on the number. I don't expect t use the memory cards for permanent storage.

Thanks

A sharpie is fine, make it simple: 1, 2, 3 ... or A, B, C ...

1, 2, 3, as chgcanon suggests.
But, how about a date in and date out?
or 1,2,3, plus subject.

Date in & date out of what? The camera? Dates are in the file metadata.
Subject?
He's not using them to archive. (Last sentence in his post.)

Bill beat me to it. The EXIF in the images cover all the shooting details.

speaking of EXIF how do you get that from images posted on UHH. Is it there after I download the image

Since you are not using the cards for archival storage, it becomes a very simple process. Just number your cards sequentially and always use them in numerical order. The number on the card you remove from the camera automatically tells you which one to use next. Your camera will tell you by way of its "exposures remaining" indication if you ever load a card that has already been used, and you only have to remember whether it has already been downloaded or not.

Be sure to allow time for drying after numbering the cards on the labels. Even Sharpies will smear on those coated paper labels when still wet.

I wound up putting little sticky labels due to limited room to write and difficulty writing on them

If the image is attached and doesn't have the EXIF stripped, you can download the file and read the EXIF using the same tools you'd use for your own images. You can google 'exif viewer' and see if a browser plug-in is available for your preferred browser. I use something called EXIF Viewer that works with Google Chrome.

My favorite is an Aluminum paint pin.. DecoColor. The Sharpie ends up gray on the back-black side of the SD card. In contrast, the DecoColor is like polished aluminum metal shine. Here on my desktop is a confirmation of the look.

Amazon, about $10 for set of 3. "Uchida of America 1234-3C DecoColor Extra Fine Point Pen, Silver/Gold, 3-Pack"

If you "don't expect to use the memory cards for permanent storage", then why put "permanent labels on SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC?" Anyway, if you are trying to keep track of what card did what, you know these little hummers are sold inside of clear plastic cases. Label the case.
