I would like advice about putting permanent labels on SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC memory cards.

1) What ink/pen should I use? Is a Sharpie Permanent Marker with an ultra fine point the best? I am concerned about the writing rubbing or washing off. I assume that there are no "safe" stick-on labels.

2) What naming scheme do you suggest? I need to handle a two week safari (non-photographic). Each image will occupy about 25MB. I expect a lot of images, but do not have a good handle on the number. I don't expect t use the memory cards for permanent storage.

Thanks

I put the camera used and the date I started the memory card. For example, a9-03-21 would be Sony a9, March, 2021.

After reading the responses, I would like to make a suggestion. Instead of worrying about keeping your cards straight, and buying multiple cards, why not purchase a device that will allow you to write all of your files to a second medium - like a large thumb drive. You can get a 512 GB USB 3.0 stick for $65.

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDCZ73-512G-G46-Everything-Stromboli-Lanyard/dp/B087YQHK78/ref=sr_1_24?dchild=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwgOGCBhAlEiwA7FUXkqVYxlFdw59Mo7o-rHqK75D8Uhb0HK-UHKAKWP-4Lz6Kp2jpFoLdnBoCghwQAvD_BwE&hvadid=410003449592&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9007515&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=1049066297709855167&hvtargid=kwd-16434792&hydadcr=24662_11410883&keywords=memory+sticks&qid=1616409196&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A10285020011%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A6931972011&rnid=6931969011&s=pc&sr=1-24

And a mini router with an SD reader - a RavPower File Hub

https://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-FileHub-Wireless-Portable-Transfer/dp/B07P5QDQ1B/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=ravpower+router&qid=1616409440&s=electronics&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&smid=AY78UD59U41CU&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzSzZPSEIwTUk3VFYwJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTcxNjk2VE5UUFcwUzdCSjdUJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2OTg0ODUxVzQzMEVKT08xNURNJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

This way you can store your files in folders named the way you like - all in one (preferably two, with a second thumb drive). I use an earlier version of this when traveling - very easy to use, and you can manage the file transfer with any wireless device. In short, it sets up a local wifi network, and uses a phone, tablet or computer to initiate (or you can do it with a single button press on the router) and monitor the file transfer. Another bonus is that it has a 6700mAh battery which can charge a phone several times. This also can plug in to a wired network (often found in hotels), and let you use up to 5 devices on its private network.

You go out and shooot - when you come back you load the day's images into their own folder on the thumb drive. Then back them up to a second thumb drive. It's fast and easy.

If you just want to label card A, B, C etc I use a brother P-Touch label maker. I put the label over the factory label. I also use the labels with the higher strength adhesive. Never had an issue.

Let me try this again! If you just want to label you cards A, B, C etc then what I use is a Brother P-Touch label maker. I use the higher strength adhesive (for everything). I put the label over the factory label. Never had an issue.

I have not labelled my memory cards. I have a set that I use in the camera and I have a spare set. I have never needed more than one card for a shoot (I started using a DSLR with 4 GB cards and I'm now using 32 GB cards and they get reformatted before a shoot). So I know which is the used card and which is the spare because the spare (in it's box in my bag) looks new and the one that gets used is worn noticeably. Of course, with 3 bodies that get used I have 3 different types of card: SD, CF, and XQD.

My cards do not get used for archival purposes so I don't need a lot of them.

All my camera bodies have 2 slots so the risk of developing a bad card is reduced.

If you "don't expect to use the memory cards for permanent storage", then why put "permanent labels on SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC?" Anyway, if you are trying to keep track of what card did what, you know these little hummers are sold inside of clear plastic cases. Label the case.

Half of mine didn't come with cases.....

I used a sharpie to number my cards. However, my question to the OP is do you have a backup plan in place for this trip? On what might be a once in a lifetime trip do not trust only one card. When we did a similar trip in 2015 each afternoon and night I backed up that day's images from both of our cameras. I found that one card did go bad. Without backing up I would not have known there was a problem. As a result I only lost one half of a day's images.

I know if you use a new card in acameta you should formate it in the camera. If I have 2 canon cameras can you switch cards between the 2 same brand cameras? I find cards tough to label and I've put little sticky labels on them but I'm afraid of them coming off In the slit. I have different lenes on the bodies and take both cards out to download them and replace in the bodies. I have mixed them up but did catch it. Best buy had 64 card on sale yestetday bought 2 new ones and first photo was my my name and contact info and what cameras they are from.
First photography class teacher say every important event first shot contact info. This was days of film and mail order and if there was a mix up you could figure out who's photos they were. Years ago I found a card on the street by a little league field and it was whole season of a little boy playing. I sure wish I could have return those memories to the parents.

I live dangerously!
I went to Iceland and did not take my laptop.
What was on the cards was it.

I don’t know how the trip is organized or what type of photographer you are (avid, casual, don’t leave home without a camera, etc), but with an estimate of the number of pix per day you could carry enough memory cards for the trip. That way, even if you upload to a lap top or disk, you would have a backup. I just labeled my cards A, B, ... (with perm Sharpie) so I could sort out the sequence when I got home. I decided that the cost of 16 & 32 GB memory cards was inconsequential compared to the trip cost and the (probably) once-in-a-lifetime nature of the trip. BTW I estimated 450 shots per day.

I number my cards and mark with a sharpie. I have a card for every day of a trip. Memory cards are cheap in comparison to losing photos I took. In the event a card is bad I only lose 1 day of my vacation or other event.

I also have a wd my passport pro that allows me to copy data from my memory cards to the drive without a computer. At the end of a day of shooting I copy all pictures from that days shooting to the drive. That way I have 2 copies of my pictures until I get home and can copy to my system.

I have a D7200 which has 2 slots. In slot 1 I record raw photos...in slot 2 I record jpg files. I don’t change card 2 unless it gets near full. It is a large card and can store a bunch of jpg files. So essentially I have 3 copies of my pictures. Jpgs would be better than nothing if I have a card failure.
