But, thankfully, you aren’t bleating that irrational complaint about the “cost” of something you’d never use, nor are you griping that it mucks up your camera.

Video does not muck up the still photo capability of a camera. It enhances it.

Remove the video function and you’d have no EFVs, and no live view modes, (a rather inconvenient dirty little secret for Nikon Df puritans).

High speed pre-capture is a great tool for action stills shooters. Post focus is handy sometimes for stills. Both these stills features derive from the camera’s video capabilities although you do NOT need to activate the loathsome video mode to use them ;-)

Actually pre capture just starts filling the buffer at a high burst rate before you fully press the shutter. If it was using video you wouldn’t get full resolution.

The Df is not for action/sports, it does have live view.

And live view is video feed. To please puritanical videophobic Df users, the ability to record video files is omitted.

Not clear on why you say it’s “not for action/sports”. It has all the essentials and lesser cameras are regularly used for “action/sports”.

Thaz why I do NOT get the whole 20MP, but 18 is good enough. It’s looping 6K video with 30 frames in the buffer just awaiting the signal to write to file.

It’s 6K video now, and sooner or later I expect we will see 8K. When it writes to file it includes the content in the buffer.

I know you are one of those Df "hater", you don't like the camera that's fine, but you should not call us "Puritanical Videophobic user". Respect others what they like, but not attack them what they like!

Yes, the Df can only take 4.5 fps, it's slow for action/sport shoot. I don't care because I don't take sport photo or action.

Typical UHH .....

You mentioned an “us”. Who is THAT ? Who else are you representing ?

Maybe you could comment on what *I* actually wrote rather than what *you* think ... if you’re capable of it.

OK- Sarcasm is my second language so- the pinhole camera I made in 7th-grade science class could not shoot videos either.

Seriously, folks, The Nikon Df was the last of the lot as far as simplicity is concerned. I really liked the traditional control dials- it was like a digital upgrade of my old D-3 and D-4 cameras.

The manufacturers and not specifically appeal to the advanced workers or the pros, per se- especially the purist types. The mass-markets want all the gadgets, bells, and whistles.

If there were options, I would opt out of all the gadgets and the video feature but having those in my cameras doesn't bother me. I might complain if it affected the price or weight. Think about it, -it costs more to get a standard transmission in a new car. The video circuitry could not add too much weight, after all, cellphones have video capabilities.

Funny thing is, folks, make BAD videos, just like they made bad 8mm and super 8 home movies- they pan and zoom too much and too fast and bore guests with shots of their kids playing in the park.

Good cinematography requires a whole lot of different skill sets. If I wanted to shoot movies, I would study the techniques and but the specialized gear.

My wife shoots videos of our cat and has lots of fun doing that, so I can relate to folks having fun with that built-in feature. Why not?

Very true, most of them are yesteryear photographers that are afraid of new technology and don’t like change.

I was interested when Df came out. Main problem, ignoring intro price, is that it’s not well balanced. At only 16MP it should have challenged the available darkness capability of the 12MP Sony S-types, and had a faster frame rate due to its small file size. But those benefits were not in the mix, so why not provide the current “normal” 24MP same as most cameras ?

I’m not afraid of “low” MP. I use the Sonys, but in compensation for 12MP I enjoy quick (silent) bursts plus “night vision” with reduced image noise. As to price, neither the Df nor the Sony “S” was attractively priced.

These threads always make me think about a simple mirrorless ILC with a precision viewfinder, no LCD, 3 knobs (Aperature, Shutter, and ISO), and perhaps a few buttons to toggle focus method, metering method, and possibly DOF. Doubt it would be any cheaper than other good MILCs, but it would be nice and simple. I'm fairly sure the size of the market will prevent such a camera from ever being developed.

I'd buy one.

Are you going to pay? Such a camera would cost more than a normal one.
