Is there a camera made just for stills?

The voice of the marketer insists: "You must have video." This siren song I have rejected from Day One. I have listened instead to my own voice. Only still photography attracts me.

I bought my camera for still use, I don't care that it does video.
(But it's nice if I do desire to utilize that function.)

I didn't hear the camera whispering to me "Use the video, use the video."

It's the voice of the consumers who want video. And the vast majority of those who aren't interested in video don't get bent out of shape because their camera has that capability, at least when they find out eliminating video wouldn't make their camera less expensive.

Fine. That was not my point, and I don’t care.
It is still on the market, and still has no video.

And nobody cares about it...

It’s too limited by today’s standards and there are much better choices in that price range.

There are two companies that come to mind. Leica and Hasselblad make cameras specific to still photography.

Natcherly, those two stellar losers :-/

Would I be wrong in thinking that videos are loads of stills viewed quckly?

If you load a video into an editor you will see all the individual frames. They are essentially jpgs although there are a few cameras recording video raw.

Whatevvvvverrr ....

But, thankfully, you aren’t bleating that irrational complaint about the “cost” of something you’d never use, nor are you griping that it mucks up your camera.

Video does not muck up the still photo capability of a camera. It enhances it.

Remove the video function and you’d have no EFVs, and no live view modes, (a rather inconvenient dirty little secret for Nikon Df puritans).

High speed pre-capture is a great tool for action stills shooters. Post focus is handy sometimes for stills. Both these stills features derive from the camera’s video capabilities although you do NOT need to activate the loathsome video mode to use them ;-)

The Nikon Df... no videos and just stills. Excellent "smallish" high-quality made-in-Japan full-frame camera that can handle new as well as vintage Nikkor lenses going back to the 1970's... Same sensor as the Nikon D4.

This is the question I would like to see an answer to. Video must cost something. How much?

Sure it costs something, but probably the biggest cost is in development. Even though it might cost slightly less to build a camera without video in the long run it’s more cost effective to include the video capability.

These threads always make me think about a simple mirrorless ILC with a precision viewfinder, no LCD, 3 knobs (Aperature, Shutter, and ISO), and perhaps a few buttons to toggle focus method, metering method, and possibly DOF. Doubt it would be any cheaper than other good MILCs, but it would be nice and simple. I'm fairly sure the size of the market will prevent such a camera from ever being developed.

That would clearly be a premium item at a premium price...like vinyl records and vacuum tube amplifiers.

I've got a stack of vinyl records and a video incapable D70, neither of which command premium prices
