OK, this defines the "odd" rule, but truth be told, we only had two puppies...lol
There were actually three salt piles, but with the lens I had, I had to choose between 2 or 2-1/2. I chose 2.
I almost always try to get an even number of flowers. I think the image is more balanced in most cases.
