Needed: Editing suggestions on how to minimize the effect of light streaks which creep into a photo from a bright window just outside the frame.

Get rid of them from the start with a lens hood.

JohnSwanda offered good advice. The more thought you put into it before tripping the shutter, the less you will have to fake afterwards.

Do a search for "removing light streaks in [editor of choice]. There are a variety of techniques around. This one is for PS:

I'd start with a hood. Next, I'd post and store an example JPEG to show the extent of the issue to be edited. Then, I'd ask for help on editing the example image with comments on how that change was made and which tool(s) was used.

Lens Hood will do magic to solve your problem.. I never shoot without a lens hood.

Sometimes they can benefit the shot... Lens hood is a good start, but if you don't want them it is, as others have suggested, a good idea to be mindful of them when composing the shot.

Do you mean lens flare or stray light on the subject? Above remedies are for lens flare rather than bad lighting.

THANK YOU! The OP asked how to EDIT the streaks, NOT how to prevent them.

Manage the light source before the shot.

I don't see anything wrong with informing the OP that there is a way to prevent them in the first place.

Some extra information is OK, but like 6 people told him how to prevent it, and only two gave info he sought. For all anyone knows, he knows exactly how to prevent it already which could be why he didn't ask. Perhaps if he asked how to prevent it, 6 people would have told him how to edit it out, and only two would have told him how prevent it

I'm not complaining about it. This forum seems hell bent on sticking strictly to the question asked and anything else is "high jacking" the thread. I'm much more in favor of letting threads take there natural course as long as they stay on topic, the topic being photography related, not how to buy a car etc. Personally I think expanding the info given helps lots of people, not just the OP. In this case though, it seemed weird that so many didn't bother to address the question asked in the first place.

Of course, when in a forum, do as the forum wants....

It would not be easy to give advice on how to edit a particular photo or cause of aberration without seeing that photo first. In this circumstance advice on prevention rather than cure is best.

The other good suggestion is for the OP to post a photo with the problem to help determine how to fix it. The OP hasn't responded. The problem with more people telling him how to prevent it is that many people respond without reading the other responses first.

I find it humorous that while we all want to prevent flares, some companies are selling us post-filters and video layers that add these "effects" or light-leaks to our media. I guess it is no different than adding grain and scratches to video for the "film look".
