Camera Center of York, PA
I reluctantly must say that this shop is unreliable and effectively stole my Nikon D-50 that I sent them for repair.
I had sporadic contact with Chris at the shop and he acknowledged receiving the camera but never contacted me again after many email messages, texts and letters.
Not trustworthy or honest in my opinion.

No telephones in your neck of the woods?

You might have found out that they were temporarily closed (maybe the pandemic) but have reopened.
Always a good idea to get the facts before accusing someone of being dishonest.

Their 'phone line is erratic at best. If they've re-opened, why haven't they fixed or returned my camera?
I stand by my post and I've been getting the "facts" for a year.
If York camera is not doing what they are supposed to do, try calling the Police Department and/or District Attorneys’ Office. They may be helpful or may ask you to file a complaint. You also have the right to proceed to a “District Court” for either a Civil or Criminal action against them. A Criminal complaint will end up being approved or denied by the District Attorneys’ Office, so some delay may occur. York is a good County for such matters. If you cannot determine in which “District” to file, either the Police or DA’s Office could tell you exactly how to get in contact. As well, the local Bar Association (each PA County has one) can provide such information. While the D50 was a fine camera it being an older model I am surprised it would hold such value that a Shop would want to steal it. Perhaps a letter with your contact information and complaint would get his attention. A copy can also be used as “evidence” should you proceed to Court. I truly hope he has not done what you suggest. Even more, I hope you get your camera returned.
Thanks for the advice. I haven't tried the legal route; It's not my nature to make a big deal out of this matter.
I have sent at least four letters with my 'phone number, street address and email, all with not response.
You're right, the camera s not of great value, but it could have been and yes, maybe they just lost it. In one of the few conversations I did have, Chris said "maybe it's at home in my workshop." Nothing further.
My purpose here is to merely post my own experience which is supported by others.
Wilgo:
Any camera has value. I would try my legal avenue were I you. The mere act of beginning it may well bring about offers of settlement. He may not be taking you very seriously and may be thinking after all this time you really won’t do anything about it. Prove him wrong and...
I never sued anyone or brought criminal charges against anyone on my own behalf, but believe when properly used our system can be very effective. You do not need to be embarrassed. From what you say, it is the Shop. Why was your camera on his workbench? Is he a qualified repairman? Was he not supposed to send it elsewhere? Was he going to do the repair himself, but charge you for repair done elsewhere? Did he botch the job and now it needs far more repair and cost than it was suggested and for which he does not wish to pay?
I do not mean to impugn his character, but if someone had my camera for over a year and I had made that many efforts to communicate I would be champing at the bit...
By the way, I forgot to mention that under Pennsylvania law, you also have the right to file a complaint at your own District Judge (DJ) if you wish. The case likely began with a telephone call from your home area and District. As well, going to York, a “forum non-conveniens” is not equitable. You should not have to travel to receive justice. Good luck if you do decide to go that route.
Thanks again for your time and advice. I take your thoughts seriously and will consider all my options.
My reason for posting my comment was to warn other UHH folks.
Opinions and information can be helpful to others. They should be weighed carefully when people consider doing business with various concerns or businesses. While one encounter may not make a huge difference for others, repeated or numerous complaints most certainly should.
A last thought: file your complaint with his local Better Business Bureau. He may belong or not, but most assuredly he won’t want to have such comments out there for others to read.
Best of luck.
Good Idea. I'll let you know things turn out and thanks for you time and interest.

Your post would be better received at your local BBB.
Dear Wilgotrego,
What a terrible situation this has become! Maybe that's why you must always deal with reputable companies, there are many out there, but you must check them out first ! I myself deal with B&H personally and they are a great company to deal with.As they say ,"the proof is in the pudding" Good luck !
I just called the number on their website and someone picked up. When was the last time you tried to call them?
I would have checked the value before sending it for repair. A D50 goes for about $50 now. Barely worth paying for shipping.

The local prosecutor will likely tell you that the problem is a civil issue. You entered into an agreement, that is a contract. Contract law applies. The prosecutor has rapers and robbers to deal with and even if it were a crime it would be so far down on the list of priorities that the statute of limitations would expire before they got to it. Small claims is an option if you can get the guy served with the lawsuit.
