Yeah a D50 is not possible to repair as it's worth so little. If a tech spends an hour on it the labor would be higher than the camera value. So it's only possible to fix it if there is nothing wrong with it at all and the tech simply reset it to factory settings.

Another issue is Nikon not selling parts.

And in all fairness to Nikon, the D50 was discontinued in 2006. Even ten years for spare parts inventory is a long time.

Car manufacturers, by Federal law, only have to retain parts for ten years after the end of that year's production. And the various models of digital cameras are more akin to personal computers or tablets. When was the last time anyone saw exact parts for a 2006 Dell or Acer, or a Motorola Razr?

There is a cottage business of keeping parts from long obsolete cameras, but nothing to approach an organized network.

Dear Wilgotrego,

What a terrible situation this has become! Maybe that's why you must always deal with reputable companies, there are many out there, but you must check them out first ! I myself deal with B&H personally and they are a great company to deal with.

Thank you.

DJ’s are small claims court. A DA may blow it off, but worth the call. There are times where they care and make a phone call. All efforts should be tried. Easy to say a guy should have checked its’ value first. Hindsight always is 20/20. Easy to say now.
No one expects to have their equipment disappear, even if it is only worth $5.00. It seemed the guys efforts were more than reasonable. Why would you not think that the store owner ought to call him? I mean the guy has been trying for more’n a year. Isn’t that enough?

I reluctantly must say that this shop is unreliable and effectively stole my Nikon D-50 that I sent them for repair.
I had sporadic contact with Chris at the shop and he acknowledged receiving the camera but never contacted me again after many email messages, texts and letters.
Not trustworthy or honest in my opinion.

From Williamsport to York is only a 2 hour drive. Why not drive there and ask where your camera is?
If it was my camera I would go there even if it was worth only a few bucks. They shouldn't steal your camera.

Your post would be better received at your local BBB.

Don't forget about filing at Small Claims for the MSRP, plus costs.
If you want them to contact you, this usually helps them find things

I would file a small claims court for maximum amount. let them show up in court and explain where camera is. I be a settlement is coming then

KEH has a 6.1MP Nikon D50 listed for $49. Adorama has one for $35. Is that really the dollar amount and camera body to be beating your chest over in small claims court?

Mark said he called the phone number today and someone answered. The OP didn't say he attempted to call today.
He previously used the excuse that the phone was erratic. I wonder why he didn't jump on the phone right away when he was told it was working. Something isn't making sense?

Bill: The guy has been calling for a year. He has sent emails, left messages, written letters, talked to the guy. You’re tough. How high do you think his burden should be? Why don’t you think such actions as he has taken oughta shift some burden to the Store owner?
You can argue many issues if you want. However, if he made all those efforts, I think he has done enough. Really, don’t you?

Well the problem isn’t resolved so I guess he hasn’t done enough. I would call if I were him.

He said "the phone was erratic". Today the phone was working. That's a lot easier than another letter or any of the other things that were suggested for something that, based on value, is probably junk.

OP posted here but didn't want to call BBB.
OP doesn't want to talk to shop even though he was told the 'erratic' phone was working.
OP said he had sporadic contact with Chris at the shop. What was discussed?

Without all the facts I think tough is good.

I might suggest a Registered and Certified letter, with Return Receipt detailing your concerns be sent first. This would be considered evidence for any further legal action.
