While most camera owners seem to be aware of firmware updates for camera bodies it seems to me that many are unaware that there are also, from time to time, firmware updates for a number of Canon lenses. Mostly it seems that they address some minor and rarely encountered glitch in the lens operation, but, it doesn't hurt to keep up to date. I just finished updating my EF 100-400 L II and my RF 50mm f/1.2 L. I discovered the lens updates a couple of years ago and now I periodically check to see if new ones are out. The update is done the same way as the camera body update.
For the record, I have always kept my cameras up-to-date and, for the last couple of years, my lenses also with absolutely no negative effects from any of the updates.

For a newbie, how do you update the camera and the lenses?
By the way, my camera is a Canon EOS 6i and Tamron 18-270
If you have registered the cameras/lenses with Canon, do they notify you of the updates? Or do you have to go looking for them?

Go to:
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/drivers-downloadsSelect your camera and click on the "Firmware" tab. T6 and T6i currently have updates. The T6s does not. Select and download to your computer the most current update. You only ever need the most current one, not every one that you may have missed. There are 2 versions of each, depending on what operating system is on your computer. These are Zip files so once on your computer they have to be extracted. Once that is done you will see a file folder and a lone file. The folder contains instructions in various languages. The lone file gets loaded onto the memory card in your camera. Before loading do an in-camera format of your card. Then put the card into your card reader and put the file (not the folder) onto the card. Just place it on the card. Do not put it into any of the folders that will be on the card. After that just put it in the camera and you are ready to start the update as per instructions from the folder. When finished re-format your card and you are good to go! The whole process takes less then 10 min. Make sure your battery is well charged.
BTW, Canon does not supply updates for any lenses except Canon. If your Tamron is capable of being updated you will need to contact Tamron for details and you will probably need a docking station.

You have to check for them yourself. You can use the link from my previous post.
Thank you for taking the time to provide Canon update procedures. Definitely will print this information.

I can tell you that when both my Canon RP and 5DIV were new they arrived needing updates that made a difference in their performance.
Never assume that the "New" product that you receive is up-to-date.
Thanks for sharing this info Larry, and

Thank you, “LFingar,” for the reminder. As a Canon user, I digitally subscribe to The UK’s EOS digital magazine, which announced Canon firmware updates on a regular basis. Lenses, not so much. I also regularly visit Sigma via their optimization application to check FW updates. Even updates that are directed toward certain issues often have minor tweaks that benefit bodies or lenses in other ways. Your post serves as an excellent reminder.
