Never assume that the "New" product that you receive is up-to-date.
Thanks for sharing this info Larry, and

A couple of my previous cameras have needed updates either at or shortly after the time of purchase. Guess it probably depends on how much time they spend in the supply chain. The R5 I just bought arrived up-to-date but I see that another update is susposed to be released soon. It's nice that the manufacturers are constantly updating their existing products and even nicer that we can do the updates quickly and easily at home.

Select your camera and click on the "Firmware" tab. T6 and T6i currently have updates. The T6s does not. Select and download to your computer the most current update. You only ever need the most current one, not every one that you may have missed. There are 2 versions of each, depending on what operating system is on your computer. These are Zip files so once on your computer they have to be extracted. Once that is done you will see a file folder and a lone file. The folder contains instructions in various languages. The lone file gets loaded onto the memory card in your camera. Before loading do an in-camera format of your card. Then put the card into your card reader and put the file (not the folder) onto the card. Just place it on the card. Do not put it into any of the folders that will be on the card. After that just put it in the camera and you are ready to start the update as per instructions from the folder. When finished re-format your card and you are good to go! The whole process takes less then 10 min. Make sure your battery is well charged.
BTW, Canon does not supply updates for any lenses except Canon. If your Tamron is capable of being updated you will need to contact Tamron for details and you will probably need a docking station.

With full recognition of the risk of inferring, I infer that if there are lens updates, that they would "update" if they were mounted on the body with the update stored on it's SD card???? I don't know of a "Docking device." Am I correct--or even close???

For Canons, go to the lens in the support area and select Firmware. The latest version will be indicated. With the lens mounted on the camera, you install the lens firmware in a similar fashion as you would camera firmware. The generic update procedure is in the attached pdf. For lenses that have a dock (Sigma, etc), the updates are done so via the dock with software (Optimization Pro for Sigma, etc).

I find no firmware updates listed for the RF 100-500 - am I missing something?

Not all lenses have current firmware updates. Some may never have any. It is a good idea to check periodically because updates can be issued at any time. Or never.

Thanks. I notice though that the article makes no mention of the EF 100-400 L II even though there is an update available.

I noticed that, which goes back to “people need to occasionally check” at least to see if FW exists or applies to their lenses.
