It is a Uvula. Does anybody know what it’s function?

Yes, it restricts my large vitamin tablets from going down easily!

Epiglottis. It is a valve that prevents food & liguids from entering the airway and lungs. Malfunction is dangerous.

Don’t know the real answer but thought it was the uvula. John also got thinking with his response

Actually the uvula is an extension of the structure that prevents food from getting into the nasal passage. The preventive structure is the soft palate, an extension of the hard palate, or roof of the mouth.

Maybe this is a little know fact, but the soft palate also revents one from inhaling or exhaling when swallowing. It is constructed slightly differently in infants and allows them to breath while nursing.

I beat you to it. PLUS, I said the same thing using significantly fewer words.

BTW, you missed the function it plays in speech.

My mom told me early on it was the gurgle... And she was always correct - just had to ask her.
