Actually the uvula is an extension of the structure that prevents food from getting into the nasal passage. The preventive structure is the soft palate, an extension of the hard palate, or roof of the mouth.
Maybe this is a little know fact, but the soft palate also revents one from inhaling or exhaling when swallowing. It is constructed slightly differently in infants and allows them to breath while nursing.
