Hi everyone.

I am interested in adding a wide-angle lens for my Nikon D5300. I do like to travel to see nature’s beauty. My next destination is Glacier National Park. I have the standard lens kit that came with the camera. They are the 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII and the 55-200mm 1:4-5.6GII. I have added a Nikon70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6. I am happy with them but I would like get a wider point of view. There are so many options that I am really confused. I have been looking at the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED Vibration Reduction Zoom Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras. I am not sure if it is what I need. It looks impressive but there are other brands and wide-angle lenses out there. Any advice or suggestions?

I am very happy with my Nikon 10-20 f4.5-5.6. I don’t use it often but it does a great job when I need a wider look for interiors or landscapes. I use it on a D7200, so it’s more like a 15-30 or so for field of view. Good luck!

I suggest you look at the Nikkor 12-24 DX. It is made for your camera and is very well made.

Personally, I do not own any lens shorter than 16mm, but yes I should. So I make wider shots with my software by making stitched panoramas.

You could get either a FX 50mm or DX 35mm Nikkor lens for their prime and normal lens high IQ and shoot multiframe panoramas. You would have to learn some new shooting and processing skills. I shoot panos hand held if in good light. Set the camera for manual exposure and manual focus. If you do try it with you zoom lens, don't change the focal length between shots and you should overlap each shot by about 25%.

I have the Nikon AFP 10-20mm. Love it. Had the Sigma 10-20 for a few years. Sold it.

I also have the Sigma 10-20mm and am very happy with it. My walk around lens is the Nikon 18-200mm, but I also have a Sigma 18-250mm and the 10-20mm is the perfect complement to both of them. I mainly use them on a D7100 but also have an older D80 that I have used them on.

This is a FANTASTIC lens for a crop sensor camera. It was basically all I used on my D3200 for landscape work.

The AF-P 10-20 Nikon lens will work on your D5300 if the D5300 has the latest firmware update. That lens is inexpensive, lightweight, and very sharp. It will be the perfect wide-angle complement to your kit. You don't need VR with a lens that wide for outdoor shooting.

I was going to suggest you look into the Sigma 10-20 mm lens, but I see others have already mentioned this glass. I will just endorse those recommendations. I have used this lens on my D7100 for several years and am very satisfied with its performance.

Use the lens you have, take a solid tripod, get a pano mount (I use RSS), and practice before your wonderful trip. You can make huge panoramic images and then you can have the ability to create the final images you will want top print and display! I strongly recommend PTGui Pro 11.31 to create your pano images. (www.ptgui.com) Get motivated ... see the gallery at https://www.ptgui.com/gallery/.

Actually, for landscape panos, unless there is a lot of stuff in the foreground that obscures part of the background, a pano head is unnecessary. I didn't use a pano head on any of the images I posted, and at least half were done hand-held, so a tripod isn't even mandatory, unless you are shooting at a very slow shutter speed. The Cliffs of Moher was done hand held with a 150mm focal length. PTGui is my go to on problem images, but Microsoft ICE (free at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/product/computational-photography-applications/image-composite-editor/, Photoshop and Lightroom are also quite good and straightforward.

This is what I use when I expect to have parallax issues.

When traveling I bring two bodies, D7200 and D850. I use Nikkor 10-24 or Tokina 11-20 and Nikkor 18-300 for my D7200.

I will probably get a lot of hate for suggesting this, but here goes. I bought a Vivatar wide angle adapter on Amazon for $25 which attaches to my Nikon 18-55mm kit lens. It takes better images than you might expect. Just a thought
