Hi everyone.

I am interested in adding a wide-angle lens for my Nikon D5300. I do like to travel to see nature’s beauty. My next destination is Glacier National Park. I have the standard lens kit that came with the camera. They are the 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII and the 55-200mm 1:4-5.6GII. I have added a Nikon70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6. I am happy with them but I would like get a wider point of view. There are so many options that I am really confused. I have been looking at the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED Vibration Reduction Zoom Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras. I am not sure if it is what I need. It looks impressive but there are other brands and wide-angle lenses out there. Any advice or suggestions?

Hi everyone. br br I am interested in adding a wi... (show quote)

The main issue is that your D5300 is a crop sensor giving you a narrow field of view compared to full frame. Going to 16-35mm (which I use) won't do much for you on your current camera. Instead, you might look at a good used full frame and a used 16-35mm and/or 24-70mm which I also have and use more than the 16-35.

You already have an 18mm focal length in your standard kit zoom. If you're using the lens outdoors for landscapes the f/3.5 shouldn't be a problem. Moving from 18mm to 16mm isn't a very big jump. Consider instead adding just a prime lens that's substantially wider. Think in the range of 14mm or 12mm to get a more noticeable change from the 18mm that you have.

I like my Sigma 10-20 for my D7200. Used it exclusively in the Utah canyons a few years back.

Having a cropped sensor, you'll need a zoom that starts at 10-12mm. There are several by Nikon and others. Read the reviews and decide.

For your camera I would recommend the Tokina 11-16. It is a 5 star rated lens and can be gotten from B&H for 449.00. It is also a constant 2.8 which means it is a fast lens and will work well in low light. VR is not that important in lenses under 35mm and at under 20mm, I doubt there is one even made with VR.

The Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD is considered to be the best ultra wide zoom lens for cropped sensor cameras right now. It's sharp, has low distortion, vibration compensation, and is fully weather sealed. It has very well controlled ghosting and flare. Its HLD (High/Low torque-modulated drive) motor focuses extremely accurately.

2.8, you could do Milkyway photos if you wanted to.

Nikon has an AFP 10-20 at a reasonable price. That is what you want. It has VR but, as noted, not too important in wide angle if you use modest fstops.

The 16-35 is a very nice lens but built for FX cameras. It is bigger, heavier, and more pricey than you need. I had one till yesterday but sold it because I’ve gone to Z mount cameras. It’s replacement 14-30 comes tomorrow...for Z6.

I still have my awesome AFS 10-24. It would be great on your camera but much more expensive and weighty than 10-20. I’m keeping it for my Z50 w adapter. It does not have VR.
