The Sony A1 excites me but I'm not likely to buy it it even though I believe it would be an asset to own since I use Sony equipment.

I'm an amateur and retired, with no expectation for incomes from my craft. The difference between what I currently use is not worth $6500 and more.

If the technology and cost trickles down to a more earthly level I'll consider it.

So true. Are we not currently enjoying useful tech that trickled down into gear that is widely affordable ? A D200 with kit lens was $3500 in its day. Today that gear is crude and outdated (functionally not obsolete). Today that price gets you quite close to the current ultimate tech.

I don’t buy $6500 bodies but I do agree with your premise. Buying a step or two behind newest tech at any time, every upgrade further enabled me by a useful degree over the gear that got displaced. And, so far, I’ve managed to hang onto both kidneys :-)

This is a really simple answer: A real photographer can take the best picture with any type of camera if he/she has the artist's eye to see what is around them. They must then be able to edit and print with what ever equipment they have once again using that artist's eye to bring out the best in the photo. The expensive camera is not important to the "real photographer".

Why do artistry and tools have to mutually exclusive?

"Real" photographers don't need expensive cameras? Then all the pros should be shooting with brownies, otherwise they are just "fake" photographers.

I'm not sure that is entirely true. On my A7R4 in E or M shutter in continuous mode there is blackout on the initial exposure but none there after until the edge of the frame is moved beyond the focus point. I'm referring to a stationary subject. I can't remember if it is the same panning or tracking a moving object.

The blackout is more noticeable when shooting faster frame rates and when you move the camera, like following a sports figure, as it takes longer to scan the changing image and processes all that new image data quickly. I own the A7RIV, A7SIII and A9. Cheers

If you don’t need the giant files for action subjects, you can always just reduce the files size down closer to “normal” and reduce the scan time.

Half, or 2/3, of 61MP is still beyond
the leading “sports cameras”. If you reduce file size by use of in-camera cropping, then acoarst there’s extra “reach” if you need it.

On the 61mp A7RIV, you have two choices, 61mp or 26mp in APS-C crop mode. The new A1 has 50mp or 21mp in APS-C crop mode, or the new jpeg-light mode and also has new HEIF file capture (which the new A7SIII also has) which is like a jpeg on steroids. The new A1 has the second iteration of that Sony-Exclusive stacked-sensor, so it doesn't have the scan time issues like an A7RIV would. Cheers

Of course if I had the money i would go for the 400mm f2.8 GM and the 600mm f4 GM . I used the best Canon and Nikon 400mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 for years to do pro sports, including NFL games, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, NASCAR, Indycar and IMSA auto racing and loads of breaking news, war coverage, and wildlife.

Cheers and nice photos and links. Check out one of my favs, Mark Smith for fast BIF shots with Sony ,Nikon and Canon gear.

I am quite familiar with Mark Smith, I follow him on Instagram and Youtube. I believe most of his incredible video is shot using the Sony A7SIII? How does the Sony alpha 1 compare for video? One day I plan to rent a Sony camera and lens to try out though hoping Nikon's next mirrorless gets closer to Sony's.
The money people spend for their gear always amazes me (myself included as someone who helped pay their way through college by delivering Newsday on LI). I bought my most expensive lens (a 500mm f/4G VRII for about $8,000) for a once in a life-time trip a number of years ago for polar bear moms and cubs coming out of their dens (a very expensive trip itself). To get the additional reach, I used a DX body. The woman photographing next to me said she was a professional photographer and she had the Nikon 800mm f/5.6 which had just come out (maybe around $20,000 then) on a full frame body. I never did see her photos but was glad I had spent the money for the 500mm f/4 since the bears didn't come out till dusk:

If you mange to sell the lens at a $1500 loss and sell a few prints you could break even. Then with zero $$ tied up in it, you can officially refer to your most excellent photo as literally *priceless* !!!

Well I passed the time to sell the lens at a $1,500 loss, there is the excellent Sigma 500mm f/4 now for $6000 new and lots of used Nikon's like mine for $5,000 or less so it is more like a loss of $4,000 or more. I have used it in subsequent years, especially with the 1.4TC though at 8.5 pounds, not that often (even took it to Africa once). So I have gotten 7 years of use now, so no regrets. The trip to me was "priceless", seeing the excitement of the cub exiting its burrow for probably the first time in its life, running around in the snow and cuddling up to its mother. I more regret my purchase of my first long lens, a Sigma 120-400mm for about $1200 for my first trip to Africa several years before, the quality of those photographs still bothers me.

Thanks Joe! I was very fortunate to witness an incredible aurora display as well as the polar bear moms and cubs though it was one of the hardest trips I have ever done. The cabin we stayed had no running water though it had heat and we had bunk beds, 4 to a room! Plus it was bitter cold. Not sure how cold, but with the wind you could barely stay outside.

Sony just announced their latest camera. Just awesome. 50mp sensor, 30fps, no blackout, much more.

I did hear this too and it’s my hope that the new camera will drive the price down on the “old” Sony (a9ii) !

The Price is $6500. Now how much can they lower the price if they take out some features like:
1. Video.
2. AF
3. High frame rate, let it goes down to 1fps.

Perhaps not much if any?
