Or is it a trick to make money and not pass additional costs on to customers by increasing fees to pay for people returning items?

Amazon is a business and designed to make money, so I don't get why they should be blamed for it.

If I print a label and put in the box, UPS ships it. If I bring it to the store, UPS has to print the label, put it in a box, attach the label, and then ship it. I don't see how anyone is saving money that way.

Some people want the company to lick the proverbial stamp for them also. I too am happy with this process.

I have no problems with returns to Amazon. They give a choice on the return page on how you want to do it.
I print out the UPS return label, put item in box along with a printed out barcode, tape up box, affix return label and tape it up. I then drop it off at a UPS store and get a receipt. Then a little bit later on I will get an email from Amazon saying return has been accepted and a refund will be sent to my bank acct.
That is one of the reasons I like buying on Amazon, easy returns.

That's great if you live close to a UPS store but I have the same problem with some returns. I should be able to print a label and leave it at a UPS pickup spot but lately I have to take it to a UPS store or it cost money to drop it off at a UPS pickup spot. Note UPS store and UPS pickup spot are not the same thing.

You keep mentioning your hour long drive to complete this task. If there isn't a regular driver on your route, and they have to schedule one to come pick up a package at your door, that DOES add cost.

In my neighborhood we have a regular truck, plus an extra UPS employee that drives a Gator with a trailer during peak seasons. For them, there is no additional cost to pick up from a residence since they drive by my house everyday.

EDIT: Not every return we have qualifies for doorstep pickup. Most of them require a UPS store, which is relatively close to the house and not really an issue for me to complete.

It seems that Amazon Returns have taken a turn for the worse.

I have four choices: bring it to UPS - a one hour round trip, bring it to a store in town - same distance, leave it at a UPS drop-off for $7.50, or have UPS pick it up for $13.50. It looks like they no longer send a label. UPS comes here at least once a week, so I would put the label on it and give it to the UPS driver.

EDIT: Looking again, there is an option to print a mailing label, but that just takes me to the address of the UPS store, with directions to bring it to the store.

Jerry I have been looking at the comments and most people don't understand what you are saying. I'm in the same situation as you are in and it is a pita.

Just buy local. No more delivery rants and your neighbor’s business doesn’t go under. A win for all.

Jerry, you whine about the slightest inconveniences. There is a cost associated with having everything done the way you prefer, so if you want it6 done your way, you should expect to pay more than you do. If you don't like the little inconveniences that come with living in a relatively sparsely populated area, then move! I happen to be very pleased with the services that Amazon provides. If you don't like what they provide, then don't buy from them. But here's the big surprise you'll get--you won't be able to find else that does any better!!!!

City slickers get all the brakes. Us country bumpkins don't. I found out this week that the local Kroger store will take pick-ups for Fedex and in your case may be UPS.

Just ran into an interesting issue with UPS Amazon returns. Dropped off return. Got receipt with tracking number. Tracking info has it still awaiting pickup at UPS Store. Not received by Amazon after 2 weeks. Turns out Amazon’s deal with UPS has UPS collecting items for some period of time and sending the batch in a single box with its own tracking number. SO ... return timing varies and the tracking number on the drop off receipt is useless.

Check and see if there are any other local dropoff/pickup locations near you. In my area, a drugstore and what appears from the outside to be a large metal, garage do this. You can even designate these for packages delivered when no one home, etc. Still a 20 mile round trip, but better than 25 oneway to nearest Staples.

Jerry’s return experience is one reason to shop somewhere else. I only buy from Amazon, because people have given me Amazon gift cards. In my last experience I just read the product info, decided I didn’t want, and went to another product. The seller sent me their product which I did not order. My return & refund effort resulted in a return offer that the UPS store said was not eligible for free return. The company was Kodiak Booksellers.

Jerry,
Sometimes, as a society, we end up with consequences that we bring upon ourselves through our actions. We chased the ‘Bezos’ dream’ because we were too lazy to go to a store and support our local economy. This led to feeling entitled to “free”deliveries. Then came the expectation of “free” unlimited returns. This quickly evolved to a lack of discipline in making choices, so we indiscriminately place orders with the intent of returning some, many or all the items, because it’s “free”. At the same time no one wants to buy a ‘returned’ item which places a hardship on the seller. To sum it up, we need to buy local giving our neighbors a job at the store so they can feed their family with dignity. Drop the ‘pitty party’, accept the fact that we aren’t “entitled” to anything “free” and live with consequences that we can only blame ourselves for.
