It seems that Amazon Returns have taken a turn for the worse.
I have four choices: bring it to UPS - a one hour round trip, bring it to a store in town - same distance, leave it at a UPS drop-off for $7.50, or have UPS pick it up for $13.50. It looks like they no longer send a label. UPS comes here at least once a week, so I would put the label on it and give it to the UPS driver.
EDIT: Looking again, there is an option to print a mailing label, but that just takes me to the address of the UPS store, with directions to bring it to the store.
We had to return a large table my wife bought for her nail salon. It was a large item and they paid for the pickup+shipping from our house. Anything smaller, I would rather not have that cost passed on to me as a customer due to high return volume, so I don't mind driving to a UPS store. Granted, mine is about 20 minutes from my house.

Is it Amazon that has taken the turn, or is it possibly UPS? It’s possible that UPS may no longer be accepting packages to their drivers.
It's Amazon. I had to drive 40 mile round trip to take to Kohl's or pay $7.50. NOT HAPPY. Walmart is starting to compete with them.

I have no problems with returns to Amazon. They give a choice on the return page on how you want to do it.
I print out the UPS return label, put item in box along with a printed out barcode, tape up box, affix return label and tape it up. I then drop it off at a UPS store and get a receipt. Then a little bit later on I will get an email from Amazon saying return has been accepted and a refund will be sent to my bank acct.
That is one of the reasons I like buying on Amazon, easy returns.

Some people want the company to lick the proverbial stamp for them also. I too am happy with this process.

Amazon changed their return policy some time ago. New policy is to drop off the return item to either a UPS Store, or in my case or a Coles. You take the item unboxed with the return bar code that Amazon provides, usually in an email, to your choice of drop offs. The drop off store (UPS or Coles) then packages and return the item. This saves Amazon money as your item is bulked packaged with other items to be returned.
The last time I returned an item to Amazon, I printed out a page of barcodes and took that and the item to the Kohls store on our mall. Gave them to the lady at the Amazon return counter and that was it.
Shipping costs money. Return shipping costs eat into their bottom line. It's just business.

Alternately, you can print a USPS label, pay for the postage with a credit card and arrange a pickup at your house (no cost unless you want it at a special time or weekend), all on line with their App, and their cost is substantially lower than UPS. Just leave it at your mailbox, and they’ll collect it at the next mail pickup.
Amazon must have changed their policy recently. The last time I returned something (a month or two ago), I printed the label and UPS picked it up at my house, all at no cost.

Yes, policy has changed. Just another Amazon trick to make more money.

That has not been my experience, at least as recently as last week. After Amazon approves a return, they provide a link to print a pre-paid return UPS label. Which allows you to take the package to your local Staples, or independent mailboxes store, or any UPS store, or any Whole Foods store, and simply drop it off.
My experience reflects Amazon's stated return policy

Or is it a trick to make money and not pass additional costs on to customers by increasing fees to pay for people returning items?
Amazon is a business and designed to make money, so I don't get why they should be blamed for it.
