I think the complaint isn’t that Amazon shouldn’t make money (and lord knows they have - the founder is one of the richest men in America - 185 B$). The complaint is like many companies today, customer loyalty is “rewarded” with a constantly escalating decrease in service and increasing cost. I could provide at least half a dozen examples from my daily life. They start out being a good deal, and after you spend some time and come to rely on them, the price goes up, and the customer service goes down. Exceptions, where customers are actually rewarded for loyalty, is increasingly rare.

End of rant...

I am extremely happy with the Amazon return process, probably because I can walk to a UPS store. Amazon send me an email with a QR code, which gets scanned at the store with the unboxed item. The only time this varies is when the item comes from a third-party vendor, then there may be policies for return specific to that vendor, such as requiring that the unopened item be boxed before shipping.

One of the reasons I continue to shop with Amazon is their ease of returns policy. I simply get the QR code on my phone, take it to a UPS store or Kohl’s, drop it off (don’t even have to package it), and get a receipt. Usually before I get home, I have an email confirming the full cost has been credited to my credit card or Amazon account. Easy-Peasy! As Clark Johnson noted the only time I have had to pay anything on a return is if the item was from one of Amazon’s third-party sellers.

I returned something to Amazon two weeks ago. . Simply printed the label and dropped it off at a local UPS store. Shortly after I received an email that they had accepted my return and would refund as soon as they received it, which was only a few days

There is another option, although possibly not available for everyone. My wife received several orders from Amazon of the holidays that were either wrong or did not fit properly. Amazon customer service told her to take it to our local Kohl's Store. She did this, and they had a special desk set up to receive Amazon return items. Withing about three days our account was credited with a refund. In addition, when she went in to Kohl's for the returns, she was given $25.00 'Kohl's Cash' coupon that she could use on any item in the store. This happened several times over the holidays, and we were pleasantly surprised by the way it was handled.

I print out the UPS return label, put item in box along with a printed out barcode, tape up box, affix return label and tape it up. I then drop it off at a UPS store and get a receipt. Then a little bit later on I will get an email from Amazon saying return has been accepted and a refund will be sent to my bank acct.
That is one of the reasons I like buying on Amazon, easy returns.

When was the last time you did that? That was my routine, too. I'd print the label and drop it in the UPS drop box, or I'd give it to the driver. I think "easy returns" are a thing of the past. Just because I don't have to put the item in a box,. that doesn't make it easy.

Maybe it depends on the item or the reason for the return. I return very few things to Amazon, but having to drive an hour makes that less convenient.

In my case, it was last week. No problems encountered.

Or is it a trick to make money and not pass additional costs on to customers by increasing fees to pay for people returning items?

Amazon is a business and designed to make money, so I don't get why they should be blamed for it.

I have no problem with Amazon returns; even when the original package has been discarded, Amazon will pay UPS to repackage the item and mail it back a no charge. I cannot ask for anymore and the UPS store is only five minutes from my house.

I’ve never had a problem with an Amazon return. I might buy 10 or 20 items over the course of a year so maybe I don’t purchase enough for the odds of a problem to catch up to me. Normally I print the label and drop it off at UPS and I’ve often received the credit from Amazon before I got home. Granted, it’s an easy trip for me. If it’s an hour trip for you maybe you can couple it with some other errands you have to do. I suspect you chose where you live for many good reasons and maybe you just have to tolerate poor Amazon return options among the downsides. I don’t think any business can do all things for all people.

I had the opposite experience on Long Island . Bought a recliner from Amazon and put it together. Found it was to small for me. Packed it up and Amazon sent ups to get it and refunded the money that day.

Choosing to live in a rural area isn't really a fault of Amazon. At least I wouldn't think so.

I just returned a lens I was interested in the other day (I wanted to try it, keep it if good - not something I would usually buy from Amazon, but figured I'd give it a shot) - Prime member.... they did provide a label, dropped it in a UPS drop box at local grocery store (UPS driver stopped for free pickup), but not our regular driver, he did not call my number, and I was out back...I heard him pull out and he honks as he leaves (why not honk when you arrive, like my regular driver would do). Anyway, as soon as the package was picked up and logged in by UPS, I was issued a full refund to my card, well ahead of it arriving at the 3rd party vendor. I can't complain about that.

Reason I returned the lens (it looked great, worked fine) - used Canon USM IS II 70-300 to try with mirrorless Sony - the 3rd party vendor sent it rolled up in one (yes, one) layer of the really thin bubble wrap, and loose in a bubble wrap mailer - now, it may last and work fine for years, OR not.... I wasn't going to chance it, (even though when buying used lenses/cameras - you don't know the history, no matter how it is packaged) and it is somewhat a crap shoot. May need to stick with MPB/UsedPhotoPro/KEH from now on, I know how they package.

Anyway, I can't complain...I do look for the free delivery/free returns in the description with Amazon purchases..it has worked to the tune of hundreds of dollars over the last 4 months. It (UPS label) was as Jerry described, not available in the early goings, take to a mail center, but later a printable version showed up in the transaction stream...not sure what's up with that. Anyway, my latest test of Amazon. Now back to looking for another, I liked the lens!
