A visit to the original, or mother J. C. Penney department store, located in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
During the mid to late 1970's, we would pass through Kemmerer every August on the way home from Grand Teton and Yellowstone N.P.'s. Our son and daughter were in grade school and my wife shopped for a few school clothes for them at this store. Still in use was the old pay system of putting the invoice and money in a tube and sending it up a cable system to the office where change would be made and sent back. Always a fun stop and we usually visited the J.C. Penney house and enjoyed lunch at a diner. So on this trip through Kemmerer a few weeks back, we stopped for a short shopping spree and took a few photos...otherwise, why did I come along!
It's amazing looking at a Penny's store that is clean and uncluttered. If the rest of their stores looked like this they might not be in so much trouble.

Beautiful shots, wonderful info, and a fine tour⭐
Not just dirty stores is a problem for them. I don't understand their thinking about a lot of things. The JC Penny store in our town was closed down a couple of years ago, even though the local store was making money for them. They were making money, the store was very clean and well run, the staff friendly and very helpful. The only reason they closed it (according to staff that we talked to) was when they asked for rent reduction they were denied, so they closed the store. Making money but closed because they didn't get their way.
never knew of those humble beginnings; thanks for posting
What a great tour, Jim! And none of the buildings were falling down (LOL).

That's what happens when the bean counters get in control - it's all about the profit margin - they don't care if there is a profit if it is not meeting the goals they set - they shut it down...
We had a Subway and a Sonic in town - closed because they were not meeting the profit margin - wrote off the building as a loss and went on their way.

Seems to be a common theme with the bean counter mentality of management!!

We still have a JCP in our local mall but there are rumors of it going out with Macy's and Christopher Banks which are leaving this summer...pretty soon and the malls will be empty of stores!!
