Not just dirty stores is a problem for them. I don't understand their thinking about a lot of things. The JC Penny store in our town was closed down a couple of years ago, even though the local store was making money for them. They were making money, the store was very clean and well run, the staff friendly and very helpful. The only reason they closed it (according to staff that we talked to) was when they asked for rent reduction they were denied, so they closed the store. Making money but closed because they didn't get their way.

Perhaps the landlord knew of their success and wanted to charge more rent so he could make more. The increase might have more than they could do and still be profitable.

The JC Penny I visited as a kid looked remarkably similar to this.

Great set Jim - thanks for sharing. The history of these stores that we take for granted makes for interesting reading.

A visit to the original, or mother J. C. Penney department store, located in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

During the mid to late 1970's, we would pass through Kemmerer every August on the way home from Grand Teton and Yellowstone N.P.'s. Our son and daughter were in grade school and my wife shopped for a few school clothes for them at this store. Still in use was the old pay system of putting the invoice and money in a tube and sending it up a cable system to the office where change would be made and sent back. Always a fun stop and we usually visited the J.C. Penney house and enjoyed lunch at a diner. So on this trip through Kemmerer a few weeks back, we stopped for a short shopping spree and took a few photos...otherwise, why did I come along!

I've been seeing notices from JCP that they made it out of bankruptcy and are back up and running. Our store never did close. Frankly, I haven't been in it for decades, as they are out of my price bracket. I really miss their catalog!

It's amazing looking at a Penny's store that is clean and uncluttered. If the rest of their stores looked like this they might not be in so much trouble.

I would suspect that is a local store management issue. The store in my hometown is always neat and orderly.

I have always liked Penney’s for their men’s clothing. The St John’s Bay line always of good quality and fit me well. Sears’ Outdoor Life was also a good line of men’s wear. It appears to me that most, if not all, the big department stores are struggling. All we have left here is a Penney’s, Belk, and Kohl’s (aside from Walmart). I think Belk will be the next one to close here in my town, judging by their lack of inventory on hand. I just despise ordering clothing online but that is the direction it is moving.

Many thanks, Bill. You're spot on with their history...if they close down the next generation won't even know they existed. A few years back I asked a younger fellow if he missed the W.T. Grant store in our strip mall...he never knew they existed. Much like the old, small neighborhood corner markets.
