They were small but relatively heavy and had a surrounding water jacket that was just filled from a local hose or water tank to maintain cooling, They had a pretty neat sound when they were running, hence the name. It was a pretty simple device.
Thank you Bushpilot and I looked up "hit n miss" engines and that is exactly what this is. They were used for a variety of purposes on farms/ranches or wherever and were kinda indispensable once you used one.
