Well, the worst thing is to be in a situation where you need your S&W 9mm but all you have is your Canon P&S . . .

I also live in Manassas and have been able to avoid situations that required a S&W 9mm. Opportunities to use a camera present themselves daily.

Right, that model is kinda "one of a kind" and yes, it does far better telephotos using the optical zoom than the - not existent - digital zoom according to this article: https://www.phonearena.com/news/optical-zoom-digital-zoom-note-20-ultra-test_id127100

They've solved the problem by using a "periscope" camera, that is: the camera is in right angle to the hole, so the lens can be longer.

Another day, another lesson learned.

Periscope! That explains the space for a longer lens. Thanks!

Well if they don't steal the camera the perp can be ID'd from your snapshot, maybe.

If you use your cell phone the photo will be on the cloud even if they take the phone.

The old saying goes...

"Guns are like parachutes: if you don't have one when you need it, then chances are that you won't ever be in need of one again."

If you do not fly, you do not need a parachute. If you live in a totally different part of the world with a very much stable and safe society, you do not need a gun. A gun can also PUT you in a bad situation. If the bad guy KNOWS that you have no gun, the risk is far lower that he will use it. It will be far worse for him in court if he does. I think that most of the people here know very little about the Northern European societies. If you have USA as a reference only, I can agree to some point. Depends where in the US you live. I spent a few yrs in Morgantown, WV. That place felt very safe. I had no gun. University people usually do not carry guns, even if they own guns.

Guns and cameras have something in common. Gun fans always say the best gun you can have is the one you have on you when it is needed. The little .380 in your pocket might save your life if you get mugged or carjacked, while the more powerful .45 or .10mm sitting in your lockbox at home won't help you at all. And the little point and shoot camera you have on you when a spectacular picture opportunity comes up will let you get the photo, while your $2 or $3 thousand dollar camera at home won't help. For this reason, I always carry a small point and shoot camera with me, while I leave my better, more expensive camera at home. If I go for a particular photo, I take my DSLR, but that isn't my everyday camera. What say you?

I totally agree on the point-and-shoot camera. I have a little Sony compact DSC-W360. It is rather old by now, but it is far more compact than my iPhone 7 Plus. If I can, I love to use my Canon EOS-1D Mk. II N and a decent zoom for Street and Cute Cats and Dogs. Many people say that the picture quality from a smartphone is as good as a point-and-shoot. Sometimes, they might be right. However, the phone is always wide angle and is is often not very good at weird lighting condition. Most of all:
THE HANDLING IS TERRIBLE!
The touch screen a nuisance. I definitely dislike the phone when it comes to fast handling.

The next issue is about guns. But that is a very large area to discuss. I live in Scandinavia, in Sweden. We are POSITIVELY NOT allowed to carry a gun. I think that is very good. If I get car jacked (your example) I give them the car and I will to 99.9 % probability walk away unharmed. If I engage in a gun fight, what happens? Well I do not have to explain that more. To be shot in a criminal situation, if you are not a gang member, is very rare here. If everyone carried a gun, we would have far more gun based injuries here.
I store my gun (rifle) at home with vital parts in a safe.
I totally agree on the point-and-shoot camera. I h... (show quote)

Unfortunately here in the US, criminals have more rights than the law abiding. Even if you give all your belongs, you stand to get shot, or stabbed. You’d be shocked at the trivial things a person gets killed for.
Very sad times.

The same in the Netherlands. Different situation indeed. People are not continuously scared by the media, we don't have a NRA, supported by the Weapon Industry.

The Weapon Industry is non existing, no lobby, no need to carry a gun...

You are lucky to live in such a beautiful country, and you don’t have the malcontents that pray on people that plaque us here. The media doesn’t promote the fear, it’s the animals committing crimes that create fear. I’m sure that you don’t have a person having their face slashed, or pushed in front of an oncoming train on a regular basis. And then there was a time when an elderly person was knocked out of their wheelchair, and it was stolen. Crime is out of control and getting worse.

I have been far more pleased when forced to use my cell phone for photography since I added an app allowing me to save in RAW. It provides far more PP capability.
