Just throwing it out there: Canon provides the most variety in mirrorless camera bodies and lenses. I believe they also make adapter rings so that lenses from DSLR systems can be used on the mirrorless camera mount.

Yeah, why function as a Beta tester for the manufacturer?

Remember with a DSLR you are really looking through the lens, where as with a mirrorless its via a sensor.
I believe the one feature of the mirrorless is it's lenses cover a wider range than the DSLR ones. Correct me if i'm wrong.
If i sold all my present cameras & lenses i could get a top line mirrorless.
If i go mirrorless i would wait so all the bugs are resolved.
Just like buying a car. Never buy the first year of production, cause many changes will be done.

Sony has been making mirrorless cameras since before you joined UHH. Far beyond beta!

Hi;
I have been mulling around the idea of going to a mirrorless DSLR. I understand the consequences. It means buying all new lenses, etc. Currently, I have a Nikon D500 with only about 10,000 snaps on the shutter, and about a half dozen various lenses. Over time I went from a Nikon D200 to a D300 to a D7000 (I used that as a back up to the D300) and finally went to the D500. I can't say that I'm unhappy with the D500. It takes excellent photos and I have had no issues with it.
My thought is this: Going forward, in not too many years down the road, ALL new cameras will be mirrorless. When that day comes, existing cameras will be worth something less than what they are worth today.
Since going mirrorless will entail getting all new lenses, it frees me to look at other camera manufacturers.
The three top contenders IMHO are: Nikon, Canon and Sony. I do a fair amount of indoor photography where I can't use a flash, so I need a camera with a decent ISO rating.
I guess the only other deciding factor is what type of trade in I can get on my current equipment. I'm looking for suggestions, with pro and cons various models. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you get Nikon and FTZ adapter you can use all your lenses just fine.

Over time you may want to get some Z lenses. A little simpler to use and lighter.

Do not underestimate learning a different manufacturers approach to controls and menus. The Nikon Z camera menus will feel right at home.

I tried a Sony a few years ago. While the hardware was excellent I couldn’t adapt to their terminology, menus, and controls. I also had a Nikon so switching back and forth made it worse for me. I dumped the Sony after six months.

Z6 has the most awesome high ISO performance of Nikon’s current crop.

Reeeeally ???? No, not really. Wherever did you get such so called information ? Maybe from “the internet” ?

With a telescope or binoculars you are looking through the lens, aided by an eyepiece. There are no cameras where you look through the lens. You are looking AT something, not THROUGH something ... with both an optical SLR viewer and an EVF. You’re looking AT a receptor, analog or digital respectively.

If you wanna look through your lens, take it off the camera and look through it. You won’t see anything useful. You won’t see a hint of the image the lens will form when it’s on the camera.

Just got my first mirrorless a Nikon Z50 with FTZ adapter same zoom lens I had on my trusty Nikon 5200
Initial impressions viewfinder looks fake very difficult to focus manually ( with Pentax M old lens and another adapter) minimally smaller
Certainly quieter and no mirror slap but so far underwhelmed
Like having 2 control wheels and user defined buttons plan to use for HDR
Only Nikon makes battery and pretty expensive
Viewfinder is biggest dissapointment but spoiled by pentaprisms, 5200 only mirrors, my 800E has as good a viewfinder as N90

I don't have a Z50 or the manual downloaded, but try two changes that apply to mirrorless cameras:

a) find the setting that brightens the EVF to show the actual exposure, maybe something about simulated view.

b) find the setting that focus 10x peeks the EVF to zoom the display in the EVF, like the DSLR Live View, so you can see where to manually focus.

So you actually had no reason to respond except to do your normal dissing of someone talking about getting a new camera.

And just what are you basing your guess upon? How many years have you been in the chip industry?

My main point being that sensor manufacturing is one of many businesses Sony is in. They do manufacture sensors for several other companies. They do manufacture sensors that Nikon uses in some of its cameras, but Nikon isn’t just buying sensors off the shelf. Sony manufactures those sensors to Nikon’s specs based on Nikon’s designs.

The bugs are pretty much resolved. We’re well past the first year of production.

Yeah, if he’s finding mirrorless to be HARDER to focus manually he’s not doing it right.
