Sony sorta halfway tried that, and had a few years of success with them. They looked like SLRs, and had an SLRs AF system, but were otherwise EVF cameras. I almost bought one. Brought one home, but promptly returned it.
But OTOH, maybe the OP finally bought one, three years ago, when he was still shopping.
