I do, it is a good comparison and makes a lot of sense to many. If I carry, its a .380 and if I am going nowhere special its a cell phone or a point and shoot.

Guns and cameras have something in common. Gun fans always say the best gun you can have is the one you have on you when it is needed. The little .380 in your pocket might save your life if you get mugged or carjacked, while the more powerful .45 or .10mm sitting in your lockbox at home won't help you at all. And the little point and shoot camera you have on you when a spectacular picture opportunity comes up will let you get the photo, while your $2 or $3 thousand dollar camera at home won't help. For this reason, I always carry a small point and shoot camera with me, while I leave my better, more expensive camera at home. If I go for a particular photo, I take my DSLR, but that isn't my everyday camera. What say you?

I totally agree on the point-and-shoot camera. I have a little Sony compact DSC-W360. It is rather old by now, but it is far more compact than my iPhone 7 Plus. If I can, I love to use my Canon EOS-1D Mk. II N and a decent zoom for Street and Cute Cats and Dogs. Many people say that the picture quality from a smartphone is as good as a point-and-shoot. Sometimes, they might be right. However, the phone is always wide angle and is is often not very good at weird lighting condition. Most of all:
THE HANDLING IS TERRIBLE!
The touch screen a nuisance. I definitely dislike the phone when it comes to fast handling.
The next issue is about guns. But that is a very large area to discuss. I live in Scandinavia, in Sweden. We are POSITIVELY NOT allowed to carry a gun. I think that is very good. If I get car jacked (your example) I give them the car and I will to 99.9 % probability walk away unharmed. If I engage in a gun fight, what happens? Well I do not have to explain that more. To be shot in a criminal situation, if you are not a gang member, is very rare here. If everyone carried a gun, we would have far more gun based injuries here.
I store my gun (rifle) at home with vital parts in a safe.

Cell phones are great, but they can reach out only so far. My Samsung cell phone goes to 8x, which is pretty good. But the point and shoot camera I carry is 20x, which really allows me to get distant shots. Sometimes that is important, especially with wildlife.
I assume that all phones have digital zoom. That is no good. You just cut off the sensor area and loose pixels. Your point-and-soot has an optical zoom. You always have all pixels.

My note 20 ultra has 5x optical zoom, 50x digital zoom.

Cellphones have digital zoom. They cut off the sensor area. Your compact camera has an optical zoom. Always full sensor area.

Okay, that was new to me. Samsung is good stuff. Still, your compact probably has a better optical zoom. One thing for sure, the sensor in your compact is larger. You find a lot of interesting information when you google on "sensor size+image quality". What brand and type is your compact?

Right, that model is kinda "one of a kind" and yes, it does far better telephotos using the optical zoom than the - not existent - digital zoom according to this article:
https://www.phonearena.com/news/optical-zoom-digital-zoom-note-20-ultra-test_id127100They've solved the problem by using a "periscope" camera, that is: the camera is in right angle to the hole, so the lens can be longer.
Another day, another lesson learned.
Quit being a jerk! If you can not say something nice be Quiet.
As a shooter, I agree, however with the results of the election, we could be in for a big storm. 2nd amendment rights are now at big time risk.

Well, the worst thing is to be in a situation where you need your S&W 9mm but all you have is your Canon P&S . . .
The old saying goes...
"Guns are like parachutes: if you don't have one when you need it, then chances are that you won't ever be in need of one again."

Guns? Been there done that. As a draftee I qualified on the M16 and M14, we all did, in less than a week. No biggie.
These days I keep a handmade blackwood uke tuned as a fiddle and a coolpix P530 in the car ... saves space.
The baby blue telecaster, the tweed deluxe clone, the handmade parlor guitar and the Sony a7 only leave home for a purpose.
You are absolutely on target. I kept a Canon G11 in my truck until someone decided to take it one night.

The same in the Netherlands. Different situation indeed. People are not continuously scared by the media, we don't have a NRA, supported by the Weapon Industry.
The Weapon Industry is non existing, no lobby, no need to carry a gun...
