You've probably been listening too closely to the wrong people ... Your D500 could easily be the last camera you need this lifetime, certainly it's barely used at 10,000 clicks. But, we all know the grass is always greener when captured with a mirrorless camera.

Consider your current Nikon lenses and whether you want to dump them all or retain DX lenses on a cropped Z50 or FX lenses on the various Nikon FF mirrorless options. After a lifeline of Nikon, the reasons to change to another brand are not compelling, unless again, you've been listening too closely to the wrong people.

For me, I shot pro Canon and Nikon SLRs and DSLRs for 40 years (both brands) and then moved to Sony mirrorless back in 2017 and have never looked back. BTW, mirrorless cameras are not DSLRs (they are not reflex cameras with a mirror, prism and OVF).

I love all the many advantages of mirrorless cameras that no DSLR can physically ever have. They are excellent mirrorless cameras from Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic and Sony. For my money Sony's history of being at the forefront of innovation in APSC and Fullframe mirrorless cameras , and its fullest of all mirrorless systems makes my choice easy.

There are excellent Sony mirrorless cameras at all budget levels. And the Sony mirrorless E-mount is the most widely produced and used mirrorless lens mount in the world with excellent lenses at all price levels from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Laowa, Zeiss, Meike, Viltrox and others. Cheers

FYI...Sony makes the sensors for most modern cameras including Nikon. If you skip the zooms and just get a couple of prime lens it won't cost much. Otherwise go to the Fuji medium format camera line for a few bucks more.

Sony manufactures sensors for some Nikon cameras, but Nikon designs those sensors. I’m guessing Sony uses some of Nikon’s precision equipment to manufacture some of their chips. It doesn’t mean anything.

Johnny, I think you have a bad case of GAS. You want a new camera and all new lenses but not make much of an argument as to why other than improved ISO. And you are afraid of depreciation of your current gear but are willing to take a loss. Actually that started as soon as you purchased the items. Nothing wrong with dumping your gear, it’s your money. A used camera store’s dream. You haven’t given enough info to recommend any type of camera. Best wishes, Ron

How said that because you can’t get a new camera you poo-poo anybody else’s interest in getting a new camera.

BTW, a DSLR means it has a mirror flipping in front of the sensor / film aka the R in reflex mirror. Your new term will be MILC - mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera. Those mirrors are the chains holding back our photography.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would catch that!

And just what are you basing your guess upon? How many years have you been in the chip industry?

I have too many lenses to jump ship for a mirrorless right know.
Remember with a DSLR you are really looking through the lens, where as with a mirrorless its via a sensor.
I believe the one feature of the mirrorless is it's lenses cover a wider range than the DSLR ones. Correct me if i'm wrong.
If i sold all my present cameras & lenses i could get a top line mirrorless.
If i go mirrorless i would wait so all the bugs are resolved.
Just like buying a car. Never buy the first year of production, cause many changes will be done.

A full frame sensor (or a cropped) is the same size whether is sits behind a mirror or not, such that the same lenses can be used on either a DSLR or MILC (with adapter). The flange distance is different, in that mirrorless lenses sit closer to the sensor, among other reasons, because the camera doesn't have to save space for a flipping mirror to lift between the sensor and the back of the lens. There's other subtle technical details, but you wanted to be corrected on whether there was a fundamental difference, which there are not.

Sony a7III and a converter from Nikon to E mount, that's the way I went from Canon or wait for the a7IV , the a7III's are at a really nice price for what you get .
