I'm looking for a 16/18mm to 200/300/400mm lens for travel (assuming that COVID will allow travel in 2021) with a Nikon DX body. What do you recommend for light weight, reasonable weather protection, reasonable quality option among Nikon, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina? Personal experience with recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

I have been pleased with my 18-140M f/3.5-5.6 Nikon Lens on my D7100. Sharp at 18MM, 140MM and everything in between.

The Tamron 18-400 is an excellent choice. I was just about to pull the trigger on one when I decided to sell my D7200. A decision I regret having made. Another excellent choice, especially for landscapes, and I’m sure you’ll want to take more than a few, is the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 wide angle zoom. The Tokina 11-20 is also a good choice.

I'm very happy with my Sigma 18-300. The Tamron 18-400 has more range but is larger, heavier and $150 more expensive. Below are a photo and a blow-up showing the IQ at 300mm for my Sigma.

For family vacations I take my D7200 with a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3. It has a few quirks, but the zoom range let's you cover almost everything in one lens. I also take a Nikon 50mm f/1.4G for those indoor low light situations where you shouldn't use a flash. IQ is good with the Tamron, not as good as the trinity (14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f/2.8), but fine for everything except a professional portfolio. The image below was taken with the Tamron at 400mm, ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/60 sec, handheld. Ya, the VR is pretty good.

The other lens I highly recommend is the Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6. It may not have the reach you are looking for, but it is one of the best DX zooms out there.

I agree with the 18 140 as far as sharpness and weight.

18-300mm 3.5-6.3 G ED VR pretty much stays on my D5300. Be happy with whatever you choose. Have fun.

I started with a Nikon 18-200; but changed to Nikon 28-300 because of longer reach. Had them originally on a D80; now on D500. I am not into landscapes/cityscapes that much, so 28mm is OK.

Tamron 16-300. About the same size and weight as the Nikon and Sigma 18-300s. In my experience with all 3 they perform about the same with similar strong & weak points but the added 2mm on the wide end are very useful.

I have the Tamron 18-200 and the 18-400. When I travel and need to lighten my load I take the 18-200 otherwise its always the 18-400. It does it all. Good luck!

I have both the 18-200 & the 18-300 (Nikon branded not Signa) I believe the 18-200 is a little sharper but took that lens on a trip to Thailand and missed the reach of the 18-300.

The Tamron 18-400 is the longest zoom range in its class - it has some weather sealing and has VC (Tamron's Vibration Control - or stabilization)

The IQ is very good for a super zoom.

Nikon AF-s DX Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 ED VR is my go to lens that rarely comes off the camera. It works for landscape and a much of the wildlife. Also recommended would be one of the Cotton Carrier systems to stabilize the camera, take the weight off the neck and leave both hands free when walking.

18-200 Nikon DX is a good lens.

Stays on my D7200 90% of the time.
