I was going to guess rock candy. Arizona is my state of birth (Bartlett Dam, near Cave Creek), but I only lived there my first year (until the dam was finished--my dad was a concrete worker). I do have some nephews in Phoenix, though, so visit there occasionally.

We have something in common David. My Dad was welding foreman on a dam project in Paonia, Colorado, on the North Fork of the Gunnison River. We too moved soon after. I have dear friends in Cave Creek. We visit there for several weeks each winter. We also have access to a condo in Sun City... so know the area well.
The photo is of Bartlett Lake today.

My last visit to my birthplace was in 2007: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157632950156073/. Your picture is very lovely.

In 2012 I did an auto trip to Colorado and Utah and did drive around some of the Gunnison Reservoir--I suppose it was formed by the dam your dad helped build? There are a few photos of that lake at the end of this Album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157631545442569/.

At least you guys have a birth place you want to visit.
I was born in Detroit, my folks left there when I was 18 months old and I went back once in 1970 when I flew in there to visit an Army buddy from Vietnam who lived in Hamtramck.

Hi, Robert! I grew up in Detroit, from about age 4 until I was commissioned 2Lt in USAF. I did not return to live there when I retired, but did visit relatives there for many years.

It is sad how the city has gone down hill. Most of the auto industry left and with it a huge % of the decent jobs so the city is shrinking and getting poorer. Earlier this year I saw an article with pictures of the Packard Motor plant that used to be one of the biggest in the world - it is where my folks met during WW II, building Merlin engines - just a shell with a few old machines rusting away. It said they were trying to decide what to do with it - that shell was built like many things back then - to last - so it could be gutted and rebuilt inside into something. But the city has no money, can't attract any businesses to take it over etc. etc. - so it just sits.

I sent you a PM. My dad worked at the Willow Run aircraft plant building B-24 bombers during WWII, later ran a gas station/garage on 7 Mile Rd, and was a Milkman for Wilson Dairy.

Another thing we have in common. I was active in Civil Air Patrol during high school, and immediately joined the Air Guard at Buckley Field in Aurora, CO upon graduation. I was re-activated and transferred to USAF during the Suez Canal Crisis. My fighter squadron was sent to Algeria, but they kept me at the air gunnery fields at Natrona Air Base in Casper, Wyoming. Later spent some time at Lowry Air Base in Denver. Never got overseas.

Hey David: The reservoir you visited in Gunnison was the Blue Mesa. This is over 100 miles from the lake in Paonia on the North Fork. I love the combination of motorcycle and on-the-road photos. I can tell you've led an interesting life. My uncle Andy was a self-made millionaire and spent half his life doing restoration of unique vehicles. A museum dedicated to him displaying a tiny portion of his work sits right on Hwy. 50 in the heart of Gunnison.
