Köln, Germany – the Cathedral, Part 1 (the Exterior and special)
I have visited Köln (Cologne) in Germany several times over the years, and the cathedral there, too. Since I seem to specialize in church sets, and I found I’d not yet done one on the Köln Cathedral, I decided to do one now. The photos here are from different tours – specific information about when, etc. can be found by clicking on a photo, which will take you to the Flickr page for it. Part 1 is of the exterior and views from a trip up to above the ceiling (a rare event provided by the Orgelbau Klais Bonn company during their renovation of the Main Organ). Part 2 is of the church interior. Part 3 is of the stained-glass windows.

The scale is simply awe-inspiring!
Hi, Mike and Joe! Thanks for the nice words. I was hoping folks might enjoy those virtually unseen pictures of the "attic". I was with a group from my church visiting the Orgelbau Klais Bonn organ builders (we did buy one of theirs) and the builder was in the process of refurbishing the Main Organ in the Cathedral and had stored some of the pipes above the ceiling while the work went on. He had permission to take us up there. That lift was scary! And the narrow walkway between it and the opening in the roof was even worse. I somehow summoned up some "brave" and did it. We were about 200 feet above the ground (the view was spectacular!).

Thank you... brings back memories. Love your pictures. We lived in Germany from '69 to '73 (I was in the US Air Force) and visited Cologne at least once. I couldn't find where I may have scanned any of my slides but my memory tells me it was covered completely in scaffolding for repair/renovation at that time. Really pressing my memory here but I don't think we were allowed to go inside the cathedral... may have had to do with the work going on. Lately, we have been longing to visit your area of Texas... have some grandchildren in Frisco.

Well, when you get here, be sure to let me know (Private message works for me) and we'll have lunch or dinner together!
Magnificent architecture!
Spectacular images David!
Magnificent, thank you. And this cathedral was significantly damaged from the WWII bombing.
Wow. The shots of the "attic" are fascinating. I've been there, but only saw the underside of all that. LOL. The story of the bombing and the sparing of the cathedral is quite a story. Germany is so full of those reminders, the ancient right next to the modern. Well done.
