The USPS should have been dismantled years ago! They are the most inefficient branch of our government there is. They lost a 2X 3 box of books for me and I have never and will never forgive them. No Excuse! SHUT IT DOWN, NOW!

A package of printer ink has been sitting in a USPS distrubution
center about 5 miles away for a week. I expect it before Easter.

FYI. Today I called a supplier of birding supplies to check on an order placed on 7 December through Amazon and to be shipped via USPS. Previous orders have arrived within a few days. Entered tracking number at USPS and display showed that number was created but package not received at post office. Called supplier and they said package was delivered to post office.
Problem is that the post office is so overwhelmed that they are not scanning packages in - so tracking is not functioning.
They further told me that their post office is just now processing packages turned in during the last week of November.
USPS is hurting.

I dropped a return to Amazon package at UPS on a Saturday at 2:30PM, and the tracking number did not get into the UPS system until Tuesday, 3 days later, 4 if you want to count Saturday. I called UPS on Monday to find out why the package wasn't in THEIR system and they kept insisting that it was Amazon's responsibility, not theirs. It finally showed up in their system on Tuesday. Oh, and the person I dealt with was extremely rude and hung up on me. UPS doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. I've NEVER dealt with a pleasant person in the local UPS store and I'm one of those that greets everyone with a smile until they deserve otherwise.

My wife mailed a package from central NC to her sister in NW Iowa on Thursday the 17th. Her sister received it on Tuesday the 22nd. I didn't think that was too bad.

United States Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, Clause 7 - "To establish post offices and post roads;"

Seems like the Congress managed to offload responsibility after "To establish...".

FedEx and UPS are limiting the number of packages they will pick up, so the overflow goes to USPS further overwhelming them. I see the other carriers still dumping packages on USPS for the last mile delivery because it’s cheaper. Postmaster general is a buffoon who sabotaged the operation by cutting people and equipment when the competition was adding resources, probably bought FedEx and UPS stock when he took the job. Tracking is erratic and it is taking longer but so far all my mail is coming through. Frankly up until this year with more traffic, mismanagement and COVID I thought they did a good job for a reasonable price. First class mail in the UK is 76p, just over a dollar, for comparison.

The USPS is not "a branch of the federal government like other branches." It is more like a non profit corporation. By congressional mandate, it must not, over time, make a profit. If you plotted the cost of postage against the cost of living you would see what looks like a sine wave straddling the cost of living. Revenue is down. People are paying their bills on line instead of mailing a check. Transportation and labor are the two biggest expenses of the USPS. If the price of gas goes up a penny, it costs the USPS a million bucks.
If they try to close down an un-profitable operation watch the public get on their phone to their congressman who gets on the phone to the PMG and say's: "Not in my district." To cut back on labor expenses they generally put a hiring freeze in place and let attrition take affect. That doesn't always put the cuts where you need them.
Would you take on all the headaches of managing one of the largest corporations in the USA for $291,650 per year? Comparable CEOs ar making millions. I wouldn't.

The universal problem with all business personnel is this: 50% of all people have IQs under 100. UHH is probably above average, though!

Usually, USPS does a good job. However. . . . I tracked an order placed late November that was to ship from Texas to Arizona. It went to New York, got stuck in the storm and I guess decided to stay!

To those who missed my point, I understand a slowdown due to the Holidays and Covid. My problem is pure incompetence and labeling a package delivered when it's not, several times. The Usps should be dismantled, especially when it loses massive amounts of money annually. If it was private it would have been gone years ago. With email USPS is even less relevant and needed.

I ordered a set of coins from the mint. They were mailed on December the 7th in Denver. I finally got them on December the 20. USPS. The tracking worked but the shipping time sucked.

USPS sucks! Why are they having such a difficult time when UPS and FedEx is not? Because they have very piss poor management. They are losing money hand over fist even though they've raised postal rates to all time highs. They've lost several important letters to me that had rent checks in them. 3 total. That is unacceptable. They don't have a good excuse and I don't care how overwhelmed they are. They should have been hiring like all the rest of the other companies that depend on posts.

Don’t complain here, call Louis DeJoy. He’s the one making all the decisions on post office cost cutting and “efficiency” improvements.

Another USPS bashing thread. If you want to address the problem, then write your congressperson and demand adequate funding, an end to the removal of sorting machines, better staffing, better management at the top, and the same rules for funding their retirement system as other government agencies.

It’s all local. At my address, we have excellent USPS service. I’ve known my mailman for many years and just showed my appreciation with a Christmas gift. He always places packages under our carport, out of the weather, while I’ve had both UPS and FedX leave packages at the street (500’ from our house) in the rain. I’ve also had Amazon Prime (which is generally good), UPS and FedX deliver packages properly, so it all depends on the delivery person.

Finally, let’s not conveniently forget that shipping charges for priority mail are roughly half that of UPS or FedX. And if you’re having trouble sending or receiving checks, the answer is simple - do your bill paying and payments electronically - end of problem.

Well stated, Chris! Absolutely agree.

If you want to understand the problem, wonder why the Covid vaccine was shipped via UPS and FedEx and not USPS. Even the Federal Government understands the problem. They just live with the limitations.
