FYI. Today I called a supplier of birding supplies to check on an order placed on 7 December through Amazon and to be shipped via USPS. Previous orders have arrived within a few days. Entered tracking number at USPS and display showed that number was created but package not received at post office. Called supplier and they said package was delivered to post office.
Problem is that the post office is so overwhelmed that they are not scanning packages in - so tracking is not functioning.
They further told me that their post office is just now processing packages turned in during the last week of November.
USPS is hurting.

USPS sucks! Why are they having such a difficult time when UPS and FedEx is not? Because they have very piss poor management. They are losing money hand over fist even though they've raised postal rates to all time highs. They've lost several important letters to me that had rent checks in them. 3 total. That is unacceptable. They don't have a good excuse and I don't care how overwhelmed they are. They should have been hiring like all the rest of the other companies that depend on posts.

USPS is totally inundated with packages! That coupled with the cutback.
The Philly distribution center has packages coming out the wazoo.
I sent three, all now delayed. They probably went through Philly.
They might still be there. Who knows.
Listed as "in transit to next facility".
One was supposed to be delivered yesterday, two today.
All still in transit.

Unacceptable? Maybe.
Undesirable? Definitely!
But things got screwed up and they won't be fixed overnight.
I'm living with it as I cannot alter what is occurring.
Do I like it? No.
Will getting pissed move things faster? I seriously doubt it.

We could have used UPS or FedEx.

I ordered an item on Ebay. USPS claimed delivery on 12/19 at 4:16 PM. Not only was I home, but I was sitting watching TV 5 ft from my front door at that time. When I chkd the delivery status, I ran outside and no package. I notified the Ebay vendor, stopped charge on my credit card, and started an investigation with USPS. The package came today (12/22) with no warning. Now I have a lot of work to do reversing what I started. I understand how busy the Post Office is. But I cannot accept the incompetence of them saying "Delivered" vs delayed. This has happened twice before and I have lost all respect for the USPS. Please don't respond with "They are so busy this time of year". I have no problem with "Shipment Delayed" status. I also get other people's mail at least once a week for about 2 years now. Not worth my time to file a complaint.

Another USPS bashing thread. If you want to address the problem, then write your congressperson and demand adequate funding, an end to the removal of sorting machines, better staffing, better management at the top, and the same rules for funding their retirement system as other government agencies.

It’s all local. At my address, we have excellent USPS service. I’ve known my mailman for many years and just showed my appreciation with a Christmas gift. He always places packages under our carport, out of the weather, while I’ve had both UPS and FedX leave packages at the street (500’ from our house) in the rain. I’ve also had Amazon Prime (which is generally good), UPS and FedX deliver packages properly, so it all depends on the delivery person.

Finally, let’s not conveniently forget that shipping charges for priority mail are roughly half that of UPS or FedX. And if you’re having trouble sending or receiving checks, the answer is simple - do your bill paying and payments electronically - end of problem.

Funding has NOTHING to do with my situation. How much money is needed to weed out incompetence? Would 1 billion dollars fix incompetence? Throwing money at a problem is simplistic and usually non effective.

Funding has everything to do with the problem. Are you aware of the retirement plan funding issue? Are you aware of the sorting machines that have been removed from the distribution centers? Are you aware of the staffing cuts? Have you compared the cost of sending a package via USPS vs UPS and FedX? Are you aware how much mail and packages USPS moves compared to UPS or FedX?

For every post like yours on USPS concerning a USPS delivery screw-up, there are at least as many concerning UPS or FedX screw ups - just Google UHH and the appropriate key words, and that will become very clear - they ALL screw up occasionally.

Addendum: Two of the three packages that I mailed by USPS on Friday morning, just left Philly this evening...
Hoping that the third leaves tonight or tomorrow morning.
(The processing facility in Philly is about 25 miles from me.)

I ordered a couple wireless hydrometer/thermometer devices for my beer making and they shipped out of Santa Rosa on Monday afternoon and will be here on the 24th as far as the tracking shows so far. Every once in a while a package might be a day late, but never had any major issues with any of the big mail/package carriers.

I agree with all of you’re points, the USPS has also been hobbled by the actions of the Postmaster General’s cutbacks at a time when COVID is wreaking havoc with the Post Office employees. Nothing this year is considered normal.

Talking with our UPS guy recently he told me that the USPS distribution center in Greensboro NC was down to 15 people due to staffing shortages and COVID. Not sure if he was telling a sea story to promote his company but it did take 4 days for a card to get to me mailed by a neighbor in my own neighborhood.

Because the new head of the USPS decided to cut back on overtime and other features that let the mail move faster. Combine that with Covid, and they have been inundated with packages to move while having fewer resources to do so.

UPS recently added young people as package carriers. The driver stays in the truck, and the kid makes a quick trip with the package. The USPS cannot hire more people.

I've been lucky to have had very good service from the USPS.

USPS has been hobbled by lack of funding and regulation.

Problem with USPS is the same problem with most government run agencies, inept management and workers. They are hard to fire and do as little as possible to get by. They really don’t worry about making a profit. I had a sister-in-law and her husband work for them and couldn’t believe the stories how they slacked at their jobs.
