I suppose they have to have something to talk about to keep their jobs secure. We had 2-3 inches here in central Indiana, and they called it a major snow event. If there’s a thunderstorm around with any chance of swirly winds involved, they take over the tv shows and report/track the storm ad nauseam when a trailer across the bottom of the screen would be sufficient. To top it off, they cannot correctly pronounce the word “temperature.” It’s like fingernails on a chalkboard to me when they say “tempachure.” There’s an “r”in the word, people!
I suppose they have to have something to talk abou... (show quote)

If two dog piss on the same fire plug it's a major weather event!!!!

What a load of crap. We got 4 inches here in NYC. When will we learn that the media manufacturers news. I no longer am a lemming and don't watch them. They're still on TV this morning claiming how bad the snow is standing in 4 INCHES OF SNOW. When I was a kid (50 years ago) we got 12 inches + regularly and it WASN'T a news event.

I know what you mean, gasman...I am originally from NYC, and back in 1948, we had a snow storm, 18 inches!!! the only thing I heard at that time was "No school today." Wow was I in "7th heaven," I took my flexible flyer out, "greased" the runners and took a flying leap onto the sled. Well the sled sunk into the snow, and I went down the hill on my belly. The "supers" had spread coal ashes on the street the night before, lol. But getting back to the topic... I believe NOTHING of what the corrupt "yellow sheets" have to say.
Rich... Oh, that I can think that far back, lol, I am 84.

I seem to remember that they forecast "flurries" when the Storm of '78 hit the Boston area. It was so deep that I couldn't open either the back or front doors and had to open the kitchen window to let the dog out to pee! She wasn't a happy camper floundering around in 4' of snow trying to figure out where she was going to do her thing.

About 60 years ago, I went to college in Montreal. First major snowstorm that I experienced dropped about 3 feet. Roads were impassible, and life stopped.

I figured that I would be stuck at home for about a week. I turned on the radio, only to learn that because of the storm, classes would be delayed 2 hours!

Actually, the blizzard of 1947 was worse - about 26 inches. My grandparents lived in NYC (Italian Harlem) and my parents drove down from the Catskills on XMas day - we were caught in the storm the next day. Somewhere I have a photo of us standing in the middle of Times Square without a vehicle in sight.

We get a "3 footer" once in a while. No big deal. Everyone knows nothing is moving, so why try. The biggest problem is what to do with it. Around here we just plow it to the side of the road. Then the individual property owners have to dig out. We had a 3 footer in March 2014 that started on a Friday afternoon. At sunup Saturday there was at least 3' everywhere in the county. My emergency generator ran until Tuesday afternoon when power was restored in our area. Kind of amusing because by Wed. most of the snow had melted. Many folks were without power long after the 3' of snow melted. Weather systems that drop very large amounts of snow are usually followed by warming trends. Around here we accept weather with much snow. In 2014 we had 225 feet of snow. We are exactly 1/2 way from the Earth's waistline to the top of it's head. The 45th Parallel is 3/4 of a mile down the road.

I don’t know where you are in The City, but measured snow depths varied. Central Park got 10.5”, Fordham in the Bronx got a foot+. Bay Ridge Brooklyn had 9.5” and Jamaica Queens, got just under a foot, while Todt Hill Staten Island had 7”.

Three feet of snow is nothing for that area. Back in the 70s my uncle that lived there had to climb out his second story window to shovel a tunnel to his front door. That never hit the national news.

Given that NYC is what it is, it could be very true that 4” there is what 12” is elsewhere. Written from Minnesota which isn’t disabled by 12” snow. We have fleets of trucks with snowplows.

Hey cdayton, lol, we are talking about the same blizzard, it was the end of '47 and the beginning of '48! I just called it 1948..... in our neighborhood in the Bronx, we measured it at 18" but I am sure it was deeper in other areas.
