I used the Nikkor 16-80 mm lens on my D7100 and now D7500. That's the Full-frame equivalent of 24-120 mm. All around Europe, that was more than enough reach. However, if you're in the western US, a longer lens like the Tamron 18-400 would be most useful. I carry the Nikkor 70-300 as a second lens a lot of the time.

I'm not sure I agree that the shorter lens would be enough. I brought an FZ-200 to Israel with me and find that I used the long end more than I thought I would (like a wall-hanger of the Dome of the Rock taken from quite a distance away on a high road overlooking the city of Jerusalem).
