Is that dry stone work? It's awesome!

They used wood inside but the structure was drystone.

Nice shots, but I wish there was something (or someone) in the shot to provide a sense of scale.

According to info on this LINK they weren't optimised for defence and the inhabitants didn't have access to the top of the wall. But the only entrance was easily defended from inside.

Thanks RG - really enjoyed.

Thanks. Yes, that would have been nice but I was very much on my own and I only had what you see.

Thank you David. Apparently they were unique to the north and west of Scotland.

This is one of Glenelg's brochs (what's left of it). Thanks to the cavity wall insulation and the thatched roof they were probably quite warm places to live.
.

Great images of magnificent dry stone masonry that has stood for several millennia! As I recall one of those near Glenelg had some of the spiral stairway remaining within the space between the inner and outer walls.

I love the travels you treat us to!

Yes, this one did have some of the cavity passageway intact and I enjoyed exploring it. Glad you enjoyed the photos.
