This is one of Glenelg's brochs (what's left of it). Thanks to the cavity wall insulation and the thatched roof they were probably quite warm places to live.

Good pics - interesting - I can imagine those kilted Scots inside - eating their haggis and drinking their whusky, with a blazing wood fire keeping them warm.

Brochs predate that stereotype by about 1600 years. They were the tallest structures of their time on mainland Britain and possibly quite common in the north, north-west and the northern isles.

Did they also double up as look-out towers? Pity about the much later stereotype - it was a cosy imagining. Guess I'm a bit of a romantic.

According to info on this LINK they weren't optimised for defence and the inhabitants didn't have access to the top of the wall. But the only entrance was easily defended from inside.
