Nikon 18-200mm or 18-55mm yes, the humble kit lens which I use a lot and am happy with the results.

It depends somewhat on you. If you are very critical, the 18-300 Sigma or 18-400 Tamron might not be good enough. I find my Sigma on the camera most of the time, and I use it more at the high end than on the wide side. Here is an example of a shot taken in medium light (with flash) at 300mm with the Sigma 18-300. The shot and a blow up. The detail is "plenty good" for me.

I forgot to mention, the Sigma is a little smaller and lighter than the Tamron as another factor in its favor.

Again, it depends on how "universal" you want it to be, and how critical you are on the outcome.
I do have a wide angle zoom (11-20 mm) and a tele zoom (150-600mm) for those occasions when the "all around" doesn't cover it.

I have the same camera and I use either the Tamron 18-200 or 18-400. Both take great pics for my use! Good luck!

I also have found the Tamron 18-200 3.5-6.3 to be a very good general use walk around/vacation lens for any of my DX cameras. Serves me well.

I was using the Sigma 18-300 on my D7100 and was very happy with it, when I handed my camera to my hubby while I went zip lining. Apparently the 300 length was not good enough for him and he broke that lens trying to get closer to my face. When I went to replace it the Tamron 18-400 was on the market so I opted for that (since hubby couldn’t complain too much about replacement cost).

That 18-400 practically lives on my D7100 now and I’m very happy with the travel images I’m able to get with it. I’ve learned how to take small pano images (both vertically as well as horizontally) and knit them using Lightroom in those cases a wider angle would have been needed.

I’m not a professional and take photos just for me; I’m happy with many of the images I get with the Tamron 18-400; I was also happy with Sigma’s 18-300.

"Dpardue" I have a question. I mentioned this way back. What type of pictures do you want to take? A macro lens is agent lens for a walk around if you shoot insects, a 500mm is great if you shoot birds. I said earlier 28-300mm is the generalness I use, but that may not be you. We have spent 7 pages of advice and you never answer (that I saw) what type of photos you want to do.
Not trying to start any problems but, I am interested to know so we can be more helpful. Thanks

I'm probably going to order a Sigma 24-105 Art in the next few hours or so for my a99ii. The sale at B&H ends on the 7th. I have a 17-50 but if attached to the ff reduces MP to 18 vs the 24 on the a77. All my others are ff lenses and I don't have anything in this range. 70-300, 150-600, 105 macro. Every zoom is s compromise in some way or another, but my research indicates it's a good choice. When (if) I go to Ireland next summer I might rent something like an 18-300, but I saw a video/slide show by someone who used the 24-105 on a trip to Italy and it looked like it did a very fine job.

My D7100 wears the Nikon 18-200VR2 all the time. I never remove it.

I used the Nikkor 16-80 mm lens on my D7100 and now D7500. That's the Full-frame equivalent of 24-120 mm. All around Europe, that was more than enough reach. However, if you're in the western US, a longer lens like the Tamron 18-400 would be most useful. I carry the Nikkor 70-300 as a second lens a lot of the time.

Happy Trails,
Dick

I'm not sure I agree that the shorter lens would be enough. I brought an FZ-200 to Israel with me and find that I used the long end more than I thought I would (like a wall-hanger of the Dome of the Rock taken from quite a distance away on a high road overlooking the city of Jerusalem).

Yes - I find the 18-300mm is a good compromise. It gives a large zoom range and was $200 less than the Tamron at that time.

Thank you.

The Sigma 18-300 was my favorite lens when I used my D3200. I have since moved on to the D750, and have the Nikon 28-300.

I found the Sigma to be affordable, and definitely covered everything I needed it to (landscape and my kids' sports). Its a great lens!

I have a Nikon 18-140 that I use on my D7200. For long shots and wildlife I have a 400mm lens that is full frame but works terrific on my 7200

Hi y'all,

Looking for suggestions for an all around
lens for travel for my Nikon D7200.

Thank you.

I have used several Nikkor 18-200 f3.5-5.6 DX on the D7000, 7100, and still have one on a 7100 that is converted to infrared. Lots of focal length and plenty sharp for a walk around.

When my D7000 was my main camera (it still is my backup to my D750), I love the Nikon 18-200 VR lens as a great all-around lens.
