This is a weird one. I received an order from Amazon yesterday. There were five items in the box, although I had ordered six. The packing slip for the missing item was there, but not the item. There is no provision for that on the Amazon site, so I had to do a return - reason: "Broken or missing parts." I printed a label, and I'll return the empty box later today. It's only a $7 item, but I hope this works out okay. Of the six items I ordered, the missing one was the most important.

Have you considered a telephone call or e-mail?

I’m even buying gift cards to use later. I’m running the risk of the local True Value and Ace and NAPA not being there later, but I see it as an investment in the community. I know a need for something from them occurs regularly. I do have to fight the urge to use places like Amazon, though, because it is so darned convenient to have each Christmas gift delivered by them. I’m previously conditioned. However, I’m using the pandemic as an opportunity to send card and gift in one package this year.

Sadly, few see it that way ... or at least on a deep enough level to act.

I won't even use the automated checkout and ATM machines.

I do use AMAZON, but only for things not readily available locally.

If you frequent Home Depot or Best Buy or many of the other chain stores and have a few minutes next time you visit them, take time to check out where 20 or 30 of their products originate. Most everything comes from China. Buying products made in China is changing the global balance of power.

That's why I do what I do. The machines don't have rent, car payments or kids in school.

I do believe in shopping locally, but there are virtually no locally owned apparel, fully stocked grocery, and drug stores in my city, which is the center of a 105,000 MSA. You’d think there would be more locally owned businesses of those types in a population of that size.

True, those types of stores have been decimated with the advent of the Walgreens, K-Marts and ultimately Targets and Walmart’s. Most locally owned apparel, shoe and drug stores exited a long time ago. We do have downtown boutiques and locally owned pharmacies; just limited selections. I don’t mind buying at local Target or Kohl’s as they provide jobs and useful services to my community; Amazon does too with local distribution centers and delivery drivers. I just want to keep encouraging competition.

I would do an online chat with them. They will probably just send out another and you will get it quicker.

My Amazon policy is ‘buy-from’ as last resort. I always check locals first.

I have found Amazon responsive to a detailed email, chat or phone. Explain the problem and let them solve it.

Did you get into the box jerry, because they are usually over large, and the excess bubble wrap/brown paper could easily be concealing your 'lost' item.

I figured this would be faster and easier. I've had to return several things to Amazon, and it's always gone smoothly. Doing it this way doesn't require a person to take the time to talk to me. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the return of nothing. The missing item was a small plastic bag with a few metal pieces and screws, and I thought I might have missed it, but I looked carefully, and it wasn't there. Fortunately, I had also ordered the same thing from another company, and that arrived the next day, so I was able to use the items. When Amazon send me another on Tuesday, I'll be ready for my next project.

Your thoughts are correct. The problem for me is that many items are not available locally and this has been the case for many years.
