I would appreciate input on what Mac laptop to purchase. I have always shied away from them but after my last Dell purchase less than 2 yrs ago and output of $1100.00 for upgrade of storage ect., I have decided not to get another as I have had it crash and repaired too many times this year.
Being a large frame camera photographer, I am interested in what model Mac you use or suggest.
Thanks for the input.

If you decide you don't need a laptop I agree with some of the others you can't beat the 27" Mac. I really had questions before I purchased one. I was a windows guy. Well I went to Best Buy with my son and looked at the 27" and was immediately in love I went right over and said I want that. Have not looked back at all. Had always heard that if you were a photographer you had to have a Mac. They were right and being a sports photographer the 27" is amazing to do all work especially post work. Just my opinion though. Thanks

Tom

As others have said, if you don’t have to have a laptop, go with the big iMac. My early 2009 is going strong with a new ssd. Max out the memory, but don’t buy it from Apple. MacSales has great prices on high quality RAM, been using them for 30 years.

I just purchased a refurbished iMac on Walmart's website for $584. They have an excellent selection

Are you interested in selling the Mac you no longer use? How old is it? Any particulars on it? Touch screen? Etc

I bought a 2019 15” MacBook Pro and loaded it to the gills. The Retina display makes a noticeable difference. It’s all expensive, but I’ll use it as long as I can update the operating system. I love it and recommend it.

May I ask why a desktop vs a laptop? Besides the editing of pics (which is an issue), I am just curious.

I am typing this on a Macpro "cheesegrater" 5,1.
Dual boot High Sierra and Window 10, right now.
2x 4tb for bulk in-place storage, plus 2x 3tb, a 2tb plus a SSD to boot. With.
6 core 3.3 CPU. 48gb ram. 4gb AMD. Added 3.1 USB card.
Added the Blu-Ray reader/writer. 2x Noctua fans at @ 10.5 volts.
AND a friend of a kid of a friend works at Wally World, and I picked up a new open box screen.
It's oldish but brand new, in warranty. No accessories and the bolt bag didn't match.
No mic, no camera. Got Roku. It's 43 inches.
It was all incremental. It ain't portable without a truck.
But it does anything, and everything, I want. It should be good for another 10 years.
i do have a clunky laptop to carry around when i need/want to.
It's portable. And expendable. And redundant.

But when I get home, everything on "there" gets transferred to "here".
YMMV, of course.
But 1 camera plus 2 lens = 2 much money to lose at it is.
I couldn't allow myself a newish Mac laptop to that swag.

16 to 32 ram, remember memory upgrade after purchase is near impossible. Call B&H photo in NY and talk it over with them. All retina displays are easy on my old eyes. I have a 16" MacBaook Pro, a bit heavy at 5 pounds, 13" AirBook, light portable Mac with a small screen, and a desk top Mac. All with big storage and lots of Ram. Never a crash or malware worries.

I have used a MacBook Pro 17 inch for 15 years. I was getting slower, especially since I replaced a (broken) hard drive with a 1TB hard drive years ago, (o large SSD'swere available at that time (another smaller 15 inch Macbook got an 250GB SSD and is much faster that my 17" macbkPro). I decided to upgrade, give myself a present and go for 1Mac 27 inch, and ended up returning it: I could not connect my old 20inch Cinema display , the screen is too high (I am only 5'4) and you have to look up , causing neck and shoulder aches, while I can work for hours on the MAcBookPro. Found out you cannot take off the stand of the new iMacs like in the old days and connect it to an adjustable desk stand arm(did this for my Cinema Display too) and had it on a stand rotated to Portrait mode. Even considered a lower desk or lower platform behind my desk or sawing off the arm (see previous authors), but decided that is crazy for brand new computer.
I have always used an external keyboard as the laptops have no numeric pad.
I am considering a 13 inch MacbookPro will probably get MacMini as the connections are easier and multiple, get an external screen like a BenQ. I am now waiting for the new Apple chip machines.

Wow. Mind blown. Watch the Apple Keynote “One More Thing,” that dropped today at 1:00 EST.

THREE new APPLE SILICON Macs... MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and 13” MacBook Pro, all with the new M1 System On a Chip.

Each of these is several times faster than its predecessor.

The new MacBook Air is faster than nearly all PC laptops sold in the last year. Battery life is amazing. The Retina Display has a P3 color gamut now.

I “need“ a new Mac next year...
