TriX, a new lens? This kind of event could call for an entire new kit. That is camera lens, flash, etc.

Congratulations to them and I hope it's an easy delivery of a very healthy baby.

My youngest son is expecting his first child (which we know is a girl) any day. Due today, but she will be induced Friday week if she doesn’t go into labor first. Naturally, I’m thinking of all the photos I’m going to take of my new granddaughter when they bring her home (unfortunately grandparents are not allowed at the hospital due to the virus). My Fuji is a lot easier to carry than my Canon FF, but since I understand flash is not good for newborns (who knew?), I’ve been thinking that I don’t have a fast lens of just the right FL for available light, so, in the best UHH GAS tradition, I just ordered a Fuji XF 50mm f2 from KEH, which should be just right, and here Thursday, just in time. The moral is: any excuse will do to buy a new lens 😈.

I don't think there's an excuse to flimsy to buy a new lens. Nevertheless, you have a fine reason.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes - we just want a healthy baby, but it’s always fun to talk about our hobby and speculate on our next acquisition.

What I’m doing is slowly duplicating my FF lenses that I use most in Fuji lenses. I could use my existing FF lenses with an adapter, but that sort of defeats the purpose of adding a smaller lighter system. I find that one lens I use in available light indoors a lot of the time is my FF 85mm f1.8, so the 50 f2 in a crop lens is similar. It’s a lot less obtrusive/noticeable to carry around the small Fuji and a fast prime in music venues, street photography and social events (if we ever have those again) than a FF with a big lens and a grip..

Congratulations on your new addition to the family. Can't think of a better reason for a new outfit. Enjoy the new lens and of course your granddaughter.

Congratulations on your soon to arrive granddaughter!! I can't wait for photos!!

I have a different view of GAS right now....Life is too short and we are not promised tomorrow. I have wanted a Nikon D810 for a long time and due to financial issues purchased a D750 because of the price difference instead. Don't get me wrong...I love the 750 and it will continue to work alongside the 810 unlike my 7000 which sits in the bag.

Three weeks ago my neighbor's parents arrived home from running errands. The father got out of the vehicle, took about 10 steps, bent down to get the newspaper and died of a stroke right there. Had the stroke occurred a few minutes earlier on the 7 lane road he could have injured/killed many innocent people including his wife.

My 810 arrived 2 days ago.

Please give new granddaughter hugs and kisses from me and tell her I said, "Welcome to the world!"

You didn’t mention which Fuji you have but I just got a 23 f/1.4 for my Fuji X T-4 which is EXCELLENT in low light. I went to my local store to compare 23mm lenses and right behind me came in a gal selling this lens!! I got it for $250 off the price of new! I am very happy with this lens.

P.S. Congratulations on a new granddaughter! I have 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Because of COVID, I’ve had very little “bonding time” with the newest addition to our family, so I take a gazillion pictures every time I see him!!

Grandchildren are our reward for raising our children. I have 3 wonderful children but they were exhausting! They have also given my wife and I 8 gorgeous and brilliant dividends. The 50mm on a full frame camera will give an accurate portrayal of the petson being photographed. You know how close or far you will be from the new baby. This should also assist you with the choice of your purchase.

Yep, you are due two more (at least). My XF 50 f2 came this morning. Fuji makes such solid, finely crafted lenses (not much if any plastic). Checked it out (tack sharp), charged up 3 batteries - I am ready for the baby! My wife and my daughter-in-law are out walking at the moment, hoping to bring on labor. She is a week overdue and she’s more than ready too!

It's not just one lens per kid. The lens you need depends on the age of the grandkid.
Newborns you can probably use a 50mm or maybe a short zoom.
Once they get into sports you will need a telephoto lens.

And some low light lenses for volleyball and basketball. I find the 85mm f/1.8 to be perfect.

Sometimes find the 50 can push u back, too far from subject, indoors; Outdoors, different matter. And u rarely get to use the full 2 openings, not enough d.o.f.
See if u can borrow a 20-70 2.8 fixed any & hav a play.
New family member, winner winner, good luck.

Thanks, but I find that a 50 on a crop body is about right for me for head portraits (which are about the size of a newborn), and if you get a lot shorter in FL, it’s not nearly as complimentary to your subjects. I have an 18-55 for this body, but it’s not as fast and no flash with newborns. I like to shoot wide open when possible, or maybe a stop down max. The reason is it isolates the subject from the background, which is seldom ideal except in a studio. I shoot wide open or nearly so for sports and portraits and candids for that reason, but it does mean you have to pay attention to your focus points.

Congratulations! Probably the best justification for new/upgraded equipment.

Anecdotally, a friend of mine who's a Canon owner, bought an $11,000 telephoto so he could shoot his granddaughter playing soccer. Now, THAT's love!
